The access to public transportation and "walkability".

$$ and cost of living...everything is overpriced in the city. Also the convenience of having everything nearby.

Noise vs. Quiet Chat Icon I used to live in the city and the noise was insane. I moved to the burbs and it took me three weeks to get used to the quiet Chat Icon

Ability to walk or use mass transit and the number of things to do. There are some fun things to do out here, but there just isn't as much.

To me the convenience of everything, being able to walk rather then get in your car to go anywhere. Having any kind of food you want - delivered!

We lived in Bayside before moving to the true 'burbs' and honestly it was the best of both worlds. I wish we had been able to afford to buy a nice home there, and we would have stayed. Who knows we may go back.

that sums it up for me- I wish we moved to Bayside, then to LB- not City, LB, Bayside

I loved living in the city- I miss it alot

Not always as readily diverse. Harder to find different cultural things to do (museums, shows, etc). Everything here seems so "cookie-cutter" to me by comparison.

Oh and needing a car to go to the supermarket or produce guy blows. I hate needing a car to do anything.

I agree with most of what was said here. We don't have a car, so big thing for us is transportation and having options RE: going out/entertainment. Everything needs to be walkable or bikeable.

You guys have one of the best subway systems in the world tooChat Icon

Everyday I took the NYC subway I wished it were the tube system of London. So much cleaner & more efficient.

Space is #1 - My BIL just got a new apt in the city on Christopher St. and DH saw it yesterday and said it is AWFUL and BIL is paying $3500/mo for it....DH said it is literally the size of our kitchen. I really love the space we have in the suburbs.

I miss the culture and opulence of the city....I love the "good life" and all the things that come with it...great food, etc., and I feel that I don't get that experience out here in the suburbs. The BEST restaurants out here don't even come close to comparing imo.

I also love how people dress up and live "big" in the city....the laid back, I don't give a crap attitude in the suburbs sometimes gets to me. I also feel that there is a small-minded approach to things in the suburbs and that people are a little close-minded.

Re: what do you consider to be the major differences between living in the city and living in the 'burbs?

Burbs: more space, backyard BBQs, parking in front of your house or the driveway, seeing all the soccer moms driving their ridiculous SUVs

City: access to many different restaurants, shops museaums, arts, public transportation, higher cost of living, dealing with noise

Oh, I completely disagree! The tube sux!!!! And the overground trains are worse!!!

I'm just really getting fed up with transportation in London because it's so freakin' expensive - and it closes early and everything is so far away! We live in South London and went to a party in North London this past weekend. Last tube is at 12am, so it's as if we'd all turn into pumpkins if we didn't leave! In the end we took a cab which cost us about £20 (around $35) for two of us in cab with 5 other people!

Chat Icon Me too. OMG I hated it. I couldnt sleep for days b/c it was so hard to fall asleep to "quiet". Chat Icon

It's amazing what your body is so used to. I've missed the background noise. I had Union Tpke, the Interboro and Woodhaven Blvd noise. Going from that to complete silence will literally want to make you go insane! I'm used to it now though.

The thing I miss the most about living in queens is being able to walk to get anything and also the diversity. I feel like diversity is embraced in the city and people are scared of it in the suburbs.

Re: what do you consider to be the major differences between living in the city and living in the 'burbs?

Where Ilive- I can walk to anything- the butcher, deli, restaurants-
I like Village living.

Difference to me is-
In the city, everything "out" is great. the restauants, events, clubs, shops.
in the burbs, you can be "in" and happy.
You can have a BBQ in YOUR yard. You can sit in your larger-home-for-the-money, and enjoy your home, instead of needing to go "out" to have some space and fun.
That's my theory- I'v never lived int he city though.

I love having a car now living in the 'burbs, but I miss the convenience of everything in the city. Also, I hate that everything around us closes at like 9! When we lived in the city, we could find pizza at 2am!

Re: what do you consider to be the major differences between living in the city and living in the 'burbs?

1.Parking and cars
2. Amount of open spaces
3. less crowds in burbs
4. less noise
5. less apartment buildings
