What do you do during the breaks?

With spring recess coming up I have been thinking what do the working parents of school age children do for supervision for their kids when they are at work? What if you do not have family to watch the kids? I would like to go back to work when DD is 6 and DS is 9 but worry with a new job I will not have the flexibility nor may not have much vacation to take off whenever they are off. My DH does not have a job with lots of vacation.

My sister has a babysitter that works at my nieces school, so when they are off the babysitter or her daughter who is in college will watch them. They are 6 and 10.

Sometimes she or her DH takes them to work or I will watch them. When they were younger she would put them in their old daycare for the week, or she would send them to their old nannys house.

I work part time, but for my 6yr old DS, there are camps that have programs have during the break. This is what im planning on doing since im looking to go back to corporate.

I also work part-time. I try to find little camps. The gymnastic camp we use to use closed. I fount M.A.T.T.S they have two locations she did the 10-2 camp during February break. I just signed her up for 3 days during spring break.

I teach dance, so I have the same breaks as my kids. If I didn't, there are lots of camps to choose from.

What do you do during the breaks?

My kids are older now, but back then I had a summer sitter (another mom who had kids in the same school) who would also watch them during school breaks. If your kids go to camps, this obviously won't work for you because there aren't really many "school break camps". Can you enlist another mom for this reason? Many are often looking for extra money. Maybe check you local moms FB group.

Mine are 4 and 6 - I work from home a day or 2, take a day or 2 off, send the older one (now in K) to the 'school' program at the daycare the younger one still attends.
My parents help out too

luckily, DH has lots of PTO to use. he will be taking off for the 2 week break in june between school and camp.
i have SOME days but mainly save them for the winter when DS is sick.

this year for spring break, my dad is taking off for the week. i know if i asked my mil would do it in a heartbeat. not sure what i would do without them.


can you maybe work from home? it's not ideal, but may save you for a day or two.

This year, for the first time, I didn't have family available for winter break. DD went to the Long Island Aquarium winter break camp and LOVED it! I planned to send her back for spring break but DH said he would take vacation time.

I use vacation time and take the time off or work from home.

DS is enrolled in a local daycare for after school care. On the school breaks I usually try to coordinate with them to take him for the week.

I am lucky that my Dad can watch her atleast a couple of the days each week that she has off. Then Ex DH will usually watch her one day, I will bring her to work with me a day here or there also. I am thinking about asking one of her camp counselors this summer if they would be available for things like this if need be.

Normally my mom will come from NY for the week or we'd send them to my inlwas, but couldn't happen this year. I'm working form home most of this week. I have to go into the office tomorrow for a few hours, so I'm having a neighbor's HS Sr stay with them.

If I didn't have flexibility to WFH, I would have put them in a camp through our park district.

We moved here a year ago and have no friends/family to watch DS, so DH & I trade days to watch when school's on break. I hypothesize that we won't have days left to take a vacation over the summer.

This year worked out great. My ex DH took Good Friday, my parents took Monday and Tuesday, my exDH Wednesday and my bf on Thurs and today

That said, I usually bring him to work with me at least one day, but he chose hanging w my bf so better for me!

I am lucky enough to have my Dad to help me 2-3 days of the week, then my ex takes her 1 day and I take her to work 1 day. I always feel so guilty that I have to work and dont have vacations planned. She hears about all of the kids in her class going away and comes home asking where we are going. ugh...
