What do you do when baby figures out how to unlock car seat?

DS figured out this week how to unclick the buckle on his car seat. Chat Icon Kind of funny, but kind of dangerous! Anyone have this problem? How do you stop them from unclicking the buckle?

DS is 10 months so he doesn't really understand no, or why it isn't safe...

Which part? The chest clip or the buckle between the legs?

I've heard a piece of the rough part of Velcro tape can work since baby's fingers don't like the roughness.

OMG he figured that out at 10 mths?? LOL. Your in troubleChat Icon DD is almost 4 and only figured it out a few months ago. (the chest clip) but she understands NO and the importance of staying safe so I juat had a stern talking to her about it and that seemed to work. Im wondering if they make something to clip on to secure it better - maybe call your car seats manufacturer?Chat Icon

Re: What do you do when baby figures out how to unlock car seat?

I cant believe you posted this bc last week i noticed while we were driving she spotted the red button to unbutton the straps. She was trying to press it and she couldnt press it hard enough to release it..shes not strong enough....but the funny thing is I thought to myself there is no way I am the only one with this problem, so I am sure the seat buckle is secure enough and infant proof!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thanks for the responses! Chat Icon He unclicks the red buckle between the legs (not the one that is fastened over the chest). So he still has the chest buckle, but now it's like a game to him to open the red buckle!

Can you cover the red part with something that he can't peel off. Maybe it's just the red intriguing him.

Wow! Ours is so hard to do, I can't imagine DD ever being able to push it that hard! That's a tough one but like one of the previous posters said, put the rough part of velcrow down on it and maybe he won't want to push into that.

Re: What do you do when baby figures out how to unlock car seat?

Not a mom here, but I used to drive my nephew around because my sis didn't drive.
As a toddler, he would unbuckle himself.
I would pull over and not move the car until he was buckled in again, then explain we could not go to the park/zoo/beach/parties unless he was buckled in his seat, just like mommy and I had to wear our seatbelts.
After a couple of starts and stops and a turnaround to go home, he figured out real fast that I wasn't kidding.

Re: What do you do when baby figures out how to unlock car seat?

No advice, but I was wondering about that myself. DS watches so closely and I have seen him trying to push the button or squeeze the clip (not strong enough or coordinated enough yet) but I worry it's only a matter of time.Chat Icon

Very strong boy you have there, that he can undo the latch already.
Like another PP stated, it might be the color red that is intriguing him. You can try putting some black electrical tape over the red part, so that it is not as visible but you can still work it.

Graco Comfort Sport. It's the same latch system as the Graco infant seats. It's not easy to undo, but once he figured out that he should put one hand beneath, then press with the other, it seems easy for him.

This is our seat--it's the red button that he opens.
