Re: What do you recommend? Crib Related

I have a regular crib with drop-down sides, it is NOT convertible. I thought for me that drop-down was a must (I'm 5'3") and many of the convertible cribs I liked didn't have drop-down sides. I also planned on giving the crib to Baby #2 when he/she comes along and putting DD in a regular bed, so I'd use the crib again anyway instead of converting to a toddler bed-- we're just doing a full-size bed for DD instead of a toddler bed.

I will say though, I have NOT once used the drop-down feature...never. I use the Ultimate Crib Sheets so I don't even need to lower the side to change sheets. So it wasn't as much of a necessity for me as I thought it would be.

I agree with the above post. If you are planning on more than 1 child, the convertible may not be the best option.
I looked at both and ended up with a drop down, which I rarely use, it's very hard to get it to go down smoothly.....I also fell in love with the set I got, which came in both drop down or convertible, but due to the setup of DS's room, the drop down looked better.

ETA
I strongly suggest picking up the book Baby Bargains if you haven't already....very helpful!

thanks for replying.. this is what im thinking as well for when we have baby #2 that i want to be able to use the crib again so i guess convertable really isnt important.

and i'm only 5'0 and thats pushing it. so i was concerned with reaching DC and chaning the sheets.

I got the convertable. When baby #2 comes, they just get that set. Either way I have to buy a new crib. And for #2 Im still probably going to purchase a convertable..it turns into a nice set.
baby bargains wrote that the drop downs can be dangerous too...

We have the Generation Next crib. It is a convertable and it has a feature that the top 3" of the side come down, but not the whole side.

The crib is very sturdy, and you have to reach both sides (Long-ways) to lower the bit.

we're both tall and got a fixed rail convertible crib.....

but for mom (who takes care of DS during the day and isn't very strong), I was thinking about buying her a drop rail crib to make things easier.....

Be super careful with the drop rails, and make sure that the crib you get has a metal mechanism and is sturdy...

Just take it one item at a time, don't try to read through the whole thing at one!
Oh and use a highliter and dogear the pages to help you when you have to spit everything back out to your DH!!!!!!

With a convertible crib, you're done buying furniture for DC as long as they live with you. You'll need bedrails (unless you get them with the set), and a mattress, but no more real furniture to buy/store/sell/etc.

I've read too many stories about drop-down side recalls, people not completely locking them up during the zombie 3am feedings. Totally forgetting to put it up when you put DC back in after a 3 am feeding, etc.

Re: What do you recommend? Crib Related

I don't think that drop down side are neccesary. We bought DS the convertable set and I never had an issue with leaning over. With that being said, DS has left bite marks on his VERY expensive furniture that we now need to cover up- as we bought the furniture thinking it was his set until he moved out. Next time around we will be buying a regular, cheaper crib and then buy a bedroom set when the baby gets older. And in fairness, the reasoning is not just because of the bites, it's because our other bedroom is smaller and a full size bed would just be too big.

I agree, I went in wanted a drop down side as I am only 5'4 but when looking we just liked the more "furniture" quality of the convertible crib.

Oh and not only am I 5'4 but DS is still rocked to sleep before beign put in the crib at 13 months and he is over 30lbs and I dont have issues with it.

We do plan on having more kids, our plan is to hand the crib down to the next child and get DS #1 his big boy furniture, adn then our current convertible crib will become the big kid furniture of DC#2

With my son (3 1/2) we bought a convertible and it was tough sometimes putting him down since I am only 5'2 but now he is using it as a full bed and loves it. With my daughter (16 months) we bought a new set since they were different sexes and we bought another convertible. If I had 2 boys I think I would have done the same since I didn't want to split up my first sons furniture by using the crib in another room. I am pregnant with #3 and now have no idea what to do or room to do.

unless your child ruins it! I went against my better judgment and got a convertible crib. DS is eating it! We finally found something that could cover the rails to protect them (and my DS). This was hard because the crib is more like furniture and the skinny plastic pieces that you can use on standard cribs would not work. Thankfully my DH could repair the bad spots before we covered up the sides with this gummi stuff we found at BBB.

Also, I think the rest of his furniture will not last us his lifetime at home. The drawers in his dressers are great for baby clothes, but will not work very well as he gets older. And the changing table/dresser is getting a little "beat up." We got a great brand that was rated very well in Baby Bargains.... I just think normal wear and tear on baby furniture make the "lifetime" aspect of it not feasible for some families.

If I had to do it all over again, I would opt for a simple standard crib and furniture.

Sorry so long winded...

Good luck!
