It's Massachusetts. On the one hand I guess I can see the point that if you hit your spouse like that it's considered spousal abuse.

However, having BTDT, sometimes a little slap on the hand or behind is the only thing that gets attention quickly when my kid is trying to stick their finger in a socket or run into a parking lot and not listening to reason. JMO.

I agree with you ladies. A slap on the hand or hiney is needed at times.

I can see your point, but there have to be laws in place to protect children, IMO some parents can take dicipline too far.

I have seen parents dicipline their cildren in public harshly, and all I can think is what do they do in the privacy of their home to these helpless children.

Re: What do you thihk of the ban on hitting your children?

Those laws are only black or white. Unfortunatelly, educating children is really a "grey" area. There is a difference between abusing a child and giving a slight tap on their hand/bottom when they are not behaving. And someone, who obviously does not have kids, will report you to child services if you reprimand your kid in the mall. Yes, it has happened to a friend (in another State) whose kid was screaming because they pass the food court and she wanted icecream and my friend said no. Chat Icon Chat Icon The woman called security on her, they called the cops...yes, the cops and alerted child services. Crazy!!!! Just because the kid screamed, someone thought she was being "abused".

Re: What do you thihk of the ban on hitting your children?

i think it's completely ridiculous! i understand that an adult should not abuse a child to teh extent of harm. but this is spanking... punishing a child if he's done wrong.. to our discretion. the law should just stay out of our homes when it comes to teaching our kid(s). what's next?? how we look at ppl?? don't stare, ppl, or you'll get a fine! don't point your finger or it'll get chopped off! this law's a joke!

Re: What do you thihk of the ban on hitting your children?

I hardly think a "ban" will stop those who are truly physically abusing their children..... but people who are just disciplining at an appropriate level will be the ones who suffer.

Re: What do you thihk of the ban on hitting your children?

I agree that everything is not as blak as white as this ban, but after reading (well I have only gotten a few chapters in), that hitting your child is equivilent to an adult temper tantrum, it has really made me really think about hitting. I have never hit them yet, and I unerstand never say never. I am going to try my absolute hardest to never hit my children, since I know first hand how humuliating and damaging being spanked was.

I do agree though if you hit your spouce it is abuse but you cna hit your kids? Why becuase they are your property. At least f my DH hit me, I could defend myself and kick him tothe curb.

I don't see this point of this ban really. Physical punishment that rises to the level of abuse is ALREADY illegal and yet it has not stopped child abusers. This ban is only really serving to criminalize parents who are just lightly disciplining their children - so I think it is kind of ridiculous. Its criminalizing many good parents for what may be just a small spanking.

My mom did this to me a few times and it's truly disgusting and cruel to do to a child. I don't think any type of behavior warrants a parent hitting a child or using soap in their mouth. Time outs, taking priveleges away, etc. can be just as effective and not as emotionally scarring as physical abuse to a child. I will never EVER treat my child in a manner I wouldn't want to be treated.

i think it's ridiculous. hitting my child is not something i will ever do lightly, but in some extenuating circumstances i think it's necessary. i only got hit once by my father, and a handful of times by my mother. needless to say i never did those things again...

I attended catholic elementary school and there was one nun who did this to the boys (soap int the mouth), it was really humiliating and over the top, I don't think any of the parents knew that she did this.

She also would hit (not hard but still) kids, again mostly the boys.

I think hitting does not lead to good behavior it just leads to fear and intimidation.

I hope that when my DS is older I find a better way to discipline them then to ever resort to hitting

I got soap in my mouth when I was really young, around 5 years old. It only happened once! and I NEVER cussed again (at least not in front of my mom) till I moved out on my own (18 years old)! I was mad at her at the time but it taught me to watch my mouth. I am glad she did it!

Re: What do you thihk of the ban on hitting your children?

I live in California, and I think we have it here too.

In my opinion(no flames please!) I think sometimes hitting is necessary. Not beating or anything just a little spank when they need it, and of course when they are old enough. I was spanked when I was younger, and I knew if I didn't behave I was going to get it. My dad was the most loving dad ever but he made sure I behaved! And I think I turned out fine, probably even better because of it.

I really don't like all these new laws telling parents how to parent their children.

Re: What do you thihk of the ban on hitting your children?

Who is anyone to say how I chose to discipline my child? Obviously, beating your children and abusing them is horrific and wrong, but slapping them on the hand or something similar should be to the parents discretion. There is a clear difference between the 2. A light slap hurts a child's ego more than their hand and gets a point across to not do something they shouldn't.
