Re: What do you thihk of the ban on hitting your children?
I agree with it, it think its totally wrong to hit your child it teaches them nothing but to be scared of you, I'm not talking about a smack on the hand, but anywhere else on the body is wrong! JMO!

i don't agree, i and i only should be the one who decides how i discipline my child, but only if i feel that is necessary like a slap in the butt.

Its ridiculous especially considering they are trying to ban washing childrens mouths out with soap!!! Give me a break!! I happen to know for a fact that this works well!!!!
My mom did this to me a few times and it's truly disgusting and cruel to do to a child. I don't think any type of behavior warrants a parent hitting a child or using soap in their mouth. Time outs, taking priveleges away, etc. can be just as effective and not as emotionally scarring as physical abuse to a child. I will never EVER treat my child in a manner I wouldn't want to be treated.

Re: What do you thihk of the ban on hitting your children?
I slapped DS's hand once and regret it to this day after seeing the look of shock in his eyes. It is a look I will never forget.
I'm not a perfect person or a perfect parent so I can't tell other parents the best way to discipline their children but what I think about is what would happen if I slapped the hand of an adult? We say we use physical forms of punishment to correct dangerous or incorrect behavior but what if we did that to a co-worker or some other adult who we saw doing someething wrong or dangerous? I'd be fired most likely. Would I be charged with assault? Why is it different that it is a child?
I know that everyone here is not talking about beating their children, just light taps on hands or bottoms but I don't know, sometimes I just look back at the day that I slapped DS's hand and I feel like crying that I did such a thing.

Re: What do you thihk of the ban on hitting your children?
I don't buy into that "don't tell me how to raise my kids" crap. It's NOT okay for an adult to hit another adult, it's a CRIME, so why should I (or anyone else) be okay with another parent hitting/spanking their child? Are any of you okay with your husband slapping you? I doubt it.

Re: What do you thihk of the ban on hitting your children?
wow... this is a real eye opener for me. I never hit DS. He is only 5 months old. But I never thought that a "slight" tap on the hand or bottom was bad when they are young/toddlers.
I guess after reading all the answers on "would you hit an adult?", I am second guessing myself.
Reflecting on this, my parents never hit us. Maybe when I was younger but I can remember up to the age of 5, and I don't recall them doing it. I remember some kids in school claiming their parents would slap them if they did not have good grades. I was horrified. I would have HATED my parents for life for hitting me.
