What do you think about Gender Selection?
DH and I have 1 son. I would love to have a daughter next but would never leave that fate into a "scientists" hands. For us, "We get what we get and we don't get upset". Ultimately healthy and happy is number one in my book.
I know there are people out there who would jump on the opportunity to select the specifics of their next child. Whether it be gender, eye color, hair color, etc...
What do you think?

Re: What do you think about Gender Selection?
it makes me very uncomfortable. i would never do it myself.
DH and i talk about how many kids we want to have all the time. if i had 4 boys we would probably try for another just to see if it would be a girl, but we would never ever do gender selection.
it just seems "wrong" to me, biologically and naturally speaking. but i am all for IF treatments and advanced medical care, so maybe i am being hypocritical. who knows

I don't think IF/IVF/etc can really be classified with specifically choosing traits your future child posses.
I am all for IF treatments as well. I think Gender Selection and IF are 2 very different subjects.

there are options with IVF to "put back" "boy" or "girl" embryos so they can be interrelated

Re: What do you think about Gender Selection?
Actually, our PCP mentioned it to my DH last time he saw him.
I will tell you why it "might" be an option for us.
DS has austism. Boys are 4 times more affected than girls.
For us, a girl next time would mean she has a "better" chance NOT to have autism. Is there any guarantee? NO! But it is in the back of our mind.
My understanding is that not everyone can do it or places would allow people to pick the sex of their next baby just because.
Also in some cultures, it's important to have a boy. I remember there was a lab in Virginia that was doing it and they allowed a family with already 5 little girls to do the "sperm wash" to give them a better chance for a boy.

I took PP's reply as they both deal in a way with "playing god" because there is medical interference to aid in conception. I see what she is saying...because while I feel gender selection is wrong, I don't feel that IF/IVF is at all....I think its a wonderful thing!! And yes they are different, but from SOME peoples point of view, there isn't much of a difference.
I would never ever do gender selection. The ONLY time I could see it being done is if there were hemophelia or some other disease in a family where one gender would suffer....
I take what god gives me, doesn't matter the gender. I think the not knowing is part of the fun!

I wouldn't do it
ETS: As much as I would love DD to have a sister if I have another I just can't leave it up to science

Re: What do you think about Gender Selection?
It it was for a medical reason, I think I would consider it. If it was just for the preference of my child's gender or looks then no.

Nope, there's a reason we get what we get, IMO.

For me, I don't believe that's a choice I want.

It's not for me; it's too close to Gattaca for my tastes.
