What do you think of (and would you support) term limits imposed on members of Congress?
right now it is possilble (and many do) to have a full career in the US Congress.
Do you think people should have the ability to do this? or should all political offices held be limited in time (like the Presidency).

Yes, we need a limit... if Presidents are limited why not Senators?
We don't need more corrupt senators like Ted Stevens. The guy was known for pork barrel spending like the infamous Bridge to Nowhere and spent 40+ years in office... :P

Re: What do you think of (and would you support) term limits imposed on members of Congress?
I posted this question last week and no one responded so I will respond to you. I am totally AGAINST career politicians. The legislative branch of government was never supposed to be a career choice. The goal was to have a government for the people by the people. You get in office, you serve your time to the best of you ability and for the good of the people and then you go back to your regular job. The reason there is a term limit on the presidency is because we were trying to avoid a dictatorship. That is also the reason we created a 3 part government, so that no one branch was more important than another. If all branches are supposed to be separately and individually as important as the others why would we pose term limits on one and not the others? I think its seriously time for congressional reform.

I agree with this.
and so does Alexander Hamilton.
and I also feel that it is far more easier for the power players to find puppets. people who sit there for YEARS and play favors in exchange for campaign contributions.
if you want a career in goverment, go work for the post office.

Re: What do you think of (and would you support) term limits imposed on members of Congress?
I'm against term limits, I think their time in office should be decided by voters.
If they have term limits god knows what they'd do during their last term knowing they couldn't be held accountable for their actions.
Changing them out every x term seems too random.

So, do you think the term limit should be eliminated for the president as well?

Not sure. Besides he isn't elected by popular vote so looking at apples and oranges.
Huge difference between senate/house members and presidency.
I prefer the voting public dictate when their time is up, that is after all the purpose of our votes.

Re: What do you think of (and would you support) term limits imposed on members of Congress?
What is the point of term limits?
Do we really want to throw the good out with the bad versus just removing the bad apples?
If we have term limits that will probably discourage good people from seeking office, does that help any of us?
Seems term limits would hurt us more than help.
We already have the ability to limit their terms - sadly many of us don't take advantage of that power enough.

see I look at it differently.
I think you go there, do you time, try to do some good and then go back to your community. much the way our founding fathers intended it.
now, once you get in office and get these benefactors dumping money into your campaign, it's harder for the new guy to break in. they just don't have the resources (usually).
and also, if I had to live in fear that my elected officials would go buck wild with senioritis, I would try to avoid voting for them in the first place.
there are congresspeople on both sides of the aisle who live in these little fiefdoms. one way to make congresspeople less appealing to lobbyists is to make it know they won't be there for long. don't get too chummy.

At the same time though there are some good folks out there that shouldn't be thrown out because they've been there X number of years.
If the public wants folks out of office they should vote them out. Take the time to learn the issues and where candidates stand and then vote accordingly.

I think we should be looking at voting records and campaign contributions for incumbents.
I do think there are perhaps a few good, incorruptible people in congress but I can only hope that they seek out another way to do good for their community in their post congressional lives.

i believe there should be term limits. imo, it keeps things fresh and there's less of a chance that someone can be bought out (though not totally bc anyone can be bought for the right price) and the long term affects would be limited.

That's the problem. It should not be looked at as a "job" per se. It's an honor to serve this country, or at least that's what it was supposed to be. I think that there are a lot of good people out there who would be honored to even serve one term, to be heard and a chance to make a difference. These people don't even bother running because they feel as if they can't beat the money machine that is the incumbent. Those who are voted in for many terms as those who either keep getting voted for because no one bothers running against them, or those who do vote for them figure "what's the difference?" Its awful how complacent that we have become as a country.

YES LIMIT! They should have to run for the offices and we should get to vote more often since they are the ones holding every decision up!

An honor? If that was the case we wouldn't pay them.
Its a job, just like being in any other area of government employment. Their job is to represent the people that sent them to state capital/DC.
The complacency is a fault of voters, not the system

A lot of democrats on this board - so I guess you would have had no problem kicking Ted Kennedy out of office back in 1970?
Knowing what he accomplished between 1970 and his death would likely have never happened.
