Re: What do you think of (and would you support) term limits imposed on members of Congress?
I think if we had REAL campaign finance reform term limits would be unnecessary. Perhaps I am an idealist.

If we have term limits that will probably discourage good people from seeking office, does that help any of us?
How would having term limits discourage good people from seeking office?
Would you take a job knowing you'd be fired after X years even if you did a great job?
That's the problem. It should not be looked at as a "job" per se. It's an honor to serve this country, or at least that's what it was supposed to be. I think that there are a lot of good people out there who would be honored to even serve one term, to be heard and a chance to make a difference. These people don't even bother running because they feel as if they can't beat the money machine that is the incumbent. Those who are voted in for many terms as those who either keep getting voted for because no one bothers running against them, or those who do vote for them figure "what's the difference?" Its awful how complacent that we have become as a country.
An honor? If that was the case we wouldn't pay them.
Its a job, just like being in any other area of government employment. Their job is to represent the people that sent them to state capital/DC.
The complacency is a fault of voters, not the system
Yes they are compensated for their time in office. But, in my opinion, it is different then being any other government employee. They are supposed to work for the people, and representing us in that branch of government. But you are right that their job should be to represent the people that sent them there. That should be the voters, and not the big business that lines their pockets and pads their seats.

A lot of democrats on this board - so I guess you would have had no problem kicking Ted Kennedy out of office back in 1970?
Knowing what he accomplished between 1970 and his death would likely have never happened.
I loved Ted Kennedy and think he did some great things, but yes, I would have had no problem kicking him out of office back in 1970 if it meant that all congresspeople would have term limits.

hey man, I had to say goodbye to Bill.
yes, b/c in contrast I believe that ALL of our congresspeople would be more swayed by there beliefs and less by their pockebooks and the corporate pandering would be much less far re reaching. maybe I am wrong. but something has got to give.
contrary to what it may appear, I don't care much for party lines. just what my head and heart tells me is right. John Edwards is a piece of ****. democrat or not. he is a full of ****, piece of ****. I can't deal with that.

I'm against term limits, I think their time in office should be decided by voters.
If they have term limits god knows what they'd do during their last term knowing they couldn't be held accountable for their actions.
Changing them out every x term seems too random.
agree

Re: What do you think of (and would you support) term limits imposed on members of Congress?
I'm republican, just to show that there is some diversity on here for those that wondered
I support the idea of term limits. Perhaps two terms as a US senator, no more than 4 or five as a congressman, that's 8 to 10 years. It would allow for fresh blood to bring in new ideas. It would also limit the influence lobbyists for corporations and wealthy individuals have on our Politicians as they would not have as many years of donations to be calling in favors on.
Think about the career politician senators who get re-elected into their nineties. Wasn't one re-elected from one of the Carolinas at the age of 92? That's nuts.
I simply do not believe that someone in their 80's or 90's, no matter how wise or healthy, can do the job as it needs to be done.
A family member is in politics and I can attest that it takes an enormous amount of energy and demands a huge amount of time to do the job well. Work doesn't stop at 5 pm. Evenings and weekends with family have to take second place to meetings with constituent groups on issues and the many "must attend" functions that politicians are expected to go to or speak at - charity fundraisers, cultural institutions, fraternal organizations, openings, etc.
I can also say that I have seen first hand how power corrupts and how some seemingly decent people really do sell their souls for it. And, after not that long in office.
Terms limits. I am for them. Nationally and locally.
I also agree with those that vote with their heads and hearts. I do not blindly follow the party line. I know better.

Re: What do you think of (and would you support) term limits imposed on members of Congress?
I don't think Term limits would solve the problem. Sometimes I feel like they limit the choices of the people. I would have loved to have kept Bubba in the White house for a few more terms. I'm happy Mayor Mike is still around.
I thin Congresspersons would still be owned by special interests because they'd be concerned about where they're going to go afterward and who is going to bankroll their next endeavor. Even without term limits if someone is doing a bad job, theoretically the PEOPLE should be able to vote them out.
I'm kind of undecided on the issue.

Definitely! DH and I say this all the time...
And correct me if I'm wrong, weren't these positions originally put in place to be for a term, not LIFE LONG positions?
