My friend claims her MD told her it's OK to have 2 full glasses of wine a week so she rations it and has a half of glass a few times a week. To me, that's ridiculous. I didn't drink that much before I was pg and don't plan to drink at all during the pg. Opinions?
I am willing to be that her "rationing" adds up to more than the amount that the doctor said is okay. My opinion is that is is easly enough to do without alcohol for a few months. I believe that your friend's MD may have really told her that it is okay in small amounts. When my doctor told me to increase my salt intake (b/c I have low blood pressure), he mentioned tomato juice or V8 as having lots of salt. I joked that I could drink that stuff easily if I could have a Bloody Mary. He said that I really could, sometimes. I haven't had a drink, though.

Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?
I am all for everything in moderation and oftentimes feel that people are a bit excessive in what they limit.
That being said, that seems like a lot to me. I had champange while I was pregnant, but it wasn't until I was WELL into the second trimester and then in my third. I would think that is a lot when the baby is still developing.

My doctor was okay with a drink a week. I think in total, I have had maybe 4-5 sips this entire pregnancy so far. It's just not worth the risk to me.

Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?
It has always been said that its okay to have 3-4 units of alcohol a week, however now there are findings that it isn't actually clear as to how much alcohol is really safe. I have said it before, but here in the UK our midwives tell us that if you are have low iron levels, to drink a guiness or two a week.
Personally, I don't drink (except if its Champagne) and I did have a few glasses of champagne during my pregnancy, but if you aren't usually a drinker, why would things change?

She is a drinker. My inclination is that she may have stretched the MD's OKing a glass or two in moderation since she's 6 months pg and still ordering wine in restaurant.
Personally I wouldn't drink, but as far as I know, its within the normal guidelines that a lot of doctors give their patients. To each their own huh?

My doctor told me it was ok for an "occasional" glass of wine, although I haven't had a sip since I got pregnant.
If I were her I wouldn't make it a habit. I don't really know what constitutes "occasional" so I would just avoid it altogether.

that is not much at all
and according to my Dr. a glass of wine at a time is fine...so spreading it out would be fine to. I wouldn't do 2 glasses at once though

Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?
It seems like a lot. When I was a bartender and they finally 'allowed' drinks to PG women, I couldn't handle serving it. A girl came in once per month for a glass of wine. It freaked me out.
People told me to indulge on our anniversary (week 20) but I couldn't. However, in my 8th month I finally decided to have my first sip. I made a full drink for DH of our favorite peanut rum. Mine was mainly ice cream with a splash of the rum. It was good!

Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?
i have not and would not drink because if something were to happen i could not be able to live with myself. every time i go to the doctor they ask if i have taken any medication or alcohol, so if they have to monitor it so closely why chance it?

Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?
I had one sip of my husband's wine on our cruise and felt so guilty. I know that doctors say an occasional glass wont hurt you and I'm sure that is true but for me it isn't something I want to do.

Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?
I think it's perfectly fine. I had several (over 10) glasses of wine while I was pregnant (after the first trimester) and my baby is completely healthy. I feel that most things in moderation are fine while pregnant.

Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?
To each his own. I don't think 2 glasses a week sometimes would do much but 2 glasses a week the entire pregnancy would make me worry. It was my decision to have no alcohol at all when I was pregnant but by the 3rd trimester my friends would occasionally have a small drink or two.

Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?
You can have a driink of wine once or twice a week, preferably red wine (if any) because it is good for circulation. I wouldn't recommend putting this on the pregnancy diet but it is ok.
Personally I think too many people have too many hang ups when it some to food and pregnancy. It's just my opinion. What works for one person's lifestyle may not work for someone else's.
Everything is about moderation. Just because you can have pizza doesn't mean you should eat two pies a week because you are pregnant.

Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?
Basically if you are drunk, your baby is prob feeling it too...
With that being said...there is nothing wrong at all with sipping a half a glass of wine, or having a beer over the course of an hour.
I would never have gone crazy or had more than that, but I sure as heck enjoyed a beer at the end of my pregnancy here and there...my doc actually told me it was healthy for me to do to relax.
I too think people worry way more than they need to. No one is getting drunk, and if you are, then you have problems.

And to each their own, but with everything known about the effects of alcohol on an unborn fetus, why even take that risk.
IMO if you cannot wait a few months for your child, then you have a problem with drinking and self control.

I agree 100%
After 28 weeks I was going to have one sip of beer but not even swallow and spit it out and I didnt even do that.

I think this is a harsh statement.
The effects of alcohol on an unborn fetus show negative effects when the amount of drinking is substantial. My doctor told me he would never, ever recommend a high amount of alcohol during pregnancy BUT...he did say that for fetal alcohol sydrome to occur, the mother must be really binge drinking throughout her pregnancy. This is when we were discussing have a drink over the course of time for relaxation.
There is nothing wrong with a little bit...do you know some doctors actually tell women to have a little for certain pregnancy induced conditions?? A small glass of wine helped my friends blood pressure go down when she was preeclamptic. Did she get drunk? Absolutely not.
I don't think that moms who have a little bit at the end of pregnancy are showing no self control...I know when i had half a beer once in a while it did me a world of good bc it helped relax me and helped me sleep if i had terrible insomnia.
