Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?

I simply refrained from drinking completely during pregnancy. I'd rather not take any chances since there is no way to know what is a safe level and what isn't. After all, some babies are born to heavy drinkers and perfectly healhty and others are born with FAS and the moms drank very lightly. I wouldn't judge (as I wouldn't know all the facts), but I would have a hard time seeing a pregnant woman drinking simply because many women claim to want the best for their babies and I don't see how drinking factors in to that equation, IMO. I do know that with my sister, my mother was ordered to have 1 beer a week for some reason (it baffled my mind then).

I agree with Kerie, she probably is taking in more than the 2 glasses with her 1/2 glass intervals and mabye she is trying to make herself feel better about all that she does drink. Though one would tihnk that if she feels guilty, she would just stop.Chat Icon

Personally I wouldn't drink, but as far as I know, its within the normal guidelines that a lot of doctors give their patients. To each their own huh?

I agree. Also, I've heard the same guidelines.

I would never.

And to each their own, but with everything known about the effects of alcohol on an unborn fetus, why even take that risk.

IMO if you cannot wait a few months for your child, then you have a problem with drinking and self control.

I think this is a harsh statement.

The effects of alcohol on an unborn fetus show negative effects when the amount of drinking is substantial. My doctor told me he would never, ever recommend a high amount of alcohol during pregnancy BUT...he did say that for fetal alcohol sydrome to occur, the mother must be really binge drinking throughout her pregnancy. This is when we were discussing have a drink over the course of time for relaxation.

There is nothing wrong with a little bit...do you know some doctors actually tell women to have a little for certain pregnancy induced conditions?? A small glass of wine helped my friends blood pressure go down when she was preeclamptic. Did she get drunk? Absolutely not.

I don't think that moms who have a little bit at the end of pregnancy are showing no self control...I know when i had half a beer once in a while it did me a world of good bc it helped relax me and helped me sleep if i had terrible insomnia.

I too agree that this is a a harsh statement. As seen from the above posts everyone's doctors has a difference of opinion on the topic; which is the same with any other topic such as fish, cold cuts, and so on.

I don't think that any of the posters have an issue with self control or a drinking problem. There is nothing wrong with wanting a glass of wine now and then. Again it is your own PERSONAL choice. We don't all have to agree with eachother but to say someone has a self contol problem because they choose to have a glass of wine or beer isn't fair.

I agree. I am not pregnant but in a book(Preventing Miscarriage, The Good News) by Jonathan Sher, an expert in miscarriage, he says that drinking a glass of wine will stop premature uterine contractions. French women drink moderately throughout their pregnancies. I think to each his own. I would not drink in the first tri at all since I have a high risk history but if my Dr tells me to I may have a glass here and there throughout the 2nd and 3rd

to me I just wouldn't take the risk.
The fact is, that we just don't know what effects alchohol really has on the fetus. We know what access can do, but not what little amounts can.

Why would she want to risk it, when her babies life is in her hands.

I am usually a drinker, but I figure I can hold out for 9 months.

I had a few glasses of wine during my late second and third trimester and I have no regrets....red wine, in moderation was okay'd by my doctor and I felt comfortable with that so I enjoyed a few glasses....to each his own Chat Icon

Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?

I have not had anything alcoholic to drink through out my entire pregnancy. However, I have had chicken marsala. I really did not think about it until after I ate it and then I felt badly. My dr said that the alcohol burned off so it was ok, but I still felt bad.

Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?

I hope no one thinks I'm judging a few glasses of wine here and there. I was simply curious what everyone thought of 2 a wk throughout the whole pregnancy - that's 80 glasses of wine thoughout a pregnancy. To me, that seems like A LOT of alcohol, but it's true - to each his own. It may also seem like a lot to me b/c 1 glass of wine gets me a little buzzed. For someone that does have wine with dinner pretty much daily pre-pg, I'm sure it's not the same effect.

I don't think a baby could be born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome by way of a mother who drank "lightly". FAS is the result of a woman abusing alcohol...

Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?

My cousins in Italy drink wine with every meal - pregnant or not and there kids are perfect. My BF's husband is from Ireland and his mother would tell us that the doctor's told her to drink a guiness every morning for the iron!!! he is fine - my BF might believe differently sometimes! I agree with the other posters that everything in moderation. i think smoking does more harm than having 1/2 glass of wine a night.

I agree with this. My 1st pregnancy was while I was living in Ireland and everyone told me to drink Guiness. I drank red wine during my pg with Alex and he was fine. I never drank enough to get drunk but if I wanted it I had a glass. I am doing the same with this pregnancy. My mom had a friend who's Dr told her to drink a glass of red wine every night because she had trouble carrying babies to term. So each Dr is different. Most Drs here in the US (this is JMO) say absolutely no alcohol because they are afraid of lawsuits if something happens during the pg. My motto is anything in moderation regarding food, exercise and wine.

Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?

I knew people would think my statement is harsh, but that is why I wrote to each their own and IMO.

I know people who have drank and have healthy babies. I just know me and god forbid something happend, I would never forgive myself.

I was at a baptism over the weekend and everyone was drinking, I did not miss it in the least.

ETA: I am sure there are thing I will do that others do not agree with, but again everyone has their own choices on how they are handling their pregnancy. I guess alcohol just scares me when the fetus is still growing.

Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?

I think it is probably OK to have a glass once in a while, but I think there is a lot of liberal interpretation of what constitutes a glass. A glass of wine is 4 oz. Most people drink more than 4 oz. in a glass, so the doctors recommendation for 2 glasses a week could easily be miscalculated into what is really double that amount.

For me, it's not worth the risk, so I just choose not to drink at all.

Re: What do you think of this (alcohol & pg related)?

i am not PG but i studied FAS and FAE in college (FAE is fetal alcohol effect, less severe than FAS). what i do know is that not one study has been able to prove that any amount of alcohol is safe. a woman who "drank lightly" could indeed give birth to a baby with FAE or FAS, and it has happened before. IMO, better safe than sorry - especially in the first trimester, where alcohol, drugs, and carcinogens (like cigarette smoking) are most likely to affect the embryo/fetus. obviously, never having been PG< i am not judging anyone here, just giving my opinion and my knowledge of FAS.
