What do you think the new school year will look like?
There are talks of alternating days, half days, no specials, no recess, no assemblies. I will be interested to see how they will go about children not attending everyday. How will parents go to work? I am beginning to get very nervous that Cuomo will not allow schools to reopen at all in September, and children will have to begin the year with new teachers, remotely. It makes me sick to my stomach actually, this will destroy my kids.

I feel exactly the same. I listen to him and truly feel he will not open schools until sometime in 2021. I have been nauseous about this.

If they eliminate specials, I am out of a job. A job that I absolutely love, and I will be devastated. I can’t let my head go there. I can’t speculate.

I can't see how parents will be able to work if they are half days or part of the week online

You’re totally right, but remember, Cuomo could not possibly care less about people working. As long as he keeps getting his paycheck (and raises), then in his very own words, the rest of us peons just have to “deal with it.”

I know - such a hypocrite. When DiBlasio closed the schools it was all about schools need to be open to let parents work.
I am hopeful that increased testing will show more people have antibodies than they thought and we will be closer to a herd immunity - allowing for a bit more normalcy...
These poor kids deserve normalcy of some sort.

Talks amongst whom? Parents or others that aren't the ones actually making the real decisions? I see this speculation all over FB everyday. It's just that. Speculation and opinions. Let's all wait to see the facts before we start worrying ourselves to death even more.

Re: What do you think the new school year will look like?
if they continue this remote learning next school year and the way my district is running it there is no point of the kids even attending.
All my district does is assign work online. there is still no teaching (no live teaching or even pre recorded lessons ) my kids are learning nothing!!
he has said many times in order to open the economy school has to be open. Does he plan on not opening it up in the fall?
I am all for caution but we have to get back to normal at some point.
However if we really are only going a few days I assume I will just have to pay for daycare which I always have to pay for anyway

Yes this. It's all this speculation that makes my anxiety and depression rage. I am taking it one day at a time and holding on to all glimmers of hope for a normal life!

Same. Our "remote learning" is a joke Its less than an hour of work a day. My DD breezes through it and asks for more. And she is being taught by math apps and you tube videos. It's ridiculous. And you know what, I don't blame the districts or the teachers one bit. They were not designed to be run like this long term. This is not what they trained for.

If it’s remote learning then at least our school taxes must go WAY down.

You are right, the king has not made his royal ruling yet, however it isn’t only parent speculation. Many colleges have said they are considering having Fall semester remotely. The king himself has said he doesn’t know about September. And honestly, what is really going to change between now and then - the virus will still be here and the experts promise us a deadlier second wave. I totally get not wanting to add more worry right now but I am trying as best as I can to plan for how to handle this if it happens because I foresee him telling us on August 15 that I will have to forego my income another 6 months to stay home to teach. And also, my kids are already very nervous about this and asking questions.

Wishful thinking but that will never happen. That would mean people would have to take pay cuts. I am still paying tuition for my daughters pre-k program that she is not attending. The teacher posts maybe a 10 min video of her reading a book and posts a few dittos. I emailed the principal and she said their staff salaries depend on tuition and so we don't get any discount or ability not to pay it.

The difference is colleges are more equipped for distance learning than K-12 institutions. I received my second masters in a school I never set foot in and it was a rigorous program.

Yes I know it is wishful thinking. But the reality is that school staff positions WILL be cut if this happens.

Staff is going to be cut next year no matter what. Aid may be cut up to 20% to schools. It’s going to a rough school year regardless.

What do you think the new school year will look like?
While I doubt any of us will see lower taxes, I would certainly think there would be cuts if you have these hoards of parents who won't send their kids. If you have 20 kindergarteners, why would you need 5 teachers?
Personally, I don't care what school looks like as long as it's open.

This has been so terrible for my kids. It is one thing to cancel all sports, but no school will devastate them. I'd look into a boarding school at that point. This online sh*t is useless.

I was only half joking when I told DH this morning that we should consider moving. Any state that will be open in the Fall would be on my list.

We are moving. To another part of NY
We seriously considered CT, so I'll be kicking myself they reopen sooner.
This is all obviously if we can close and neither of us lose our jobs, which isn't a remote possibility since we can't leave a 4 year old to her own devices for 10 hours a day.

Re: What do you think the new school year will look like?
If they don't reopen in the fall then I will move to a state where the schools are open. We also own two other properties where we could register our children for school so I would consider relocating to either one of those temporarily. There is no way I will stay on Long Island/in NY if most of the world is open and we are remaining closed. I am starting to hate Cuomo.
