If they don't reopen in the fall then I will move to a state where the schools are open. We also own two other properties where we could register our children for school so I would consider relocating to either one of those temporarily. There is no way I will stay on Long Island/in NY if most of the world is open and we are remaining closed. I am starting to hate Cuomo.
We are seriously considering relocating. DH is close to retirement so the kids and I would move - and he'd arrange his schedule so he could come down often.
I think now is as good a time as any since the kids are so detached from their friends.
They have been enjoying touring homes online and have even picked out their rooms in some of them.

No kids so school or no school doesn’t effect me that way. But ... if schools are closed or part time hours/days, then people will have to hire help to watch their kids when they are at work. So now you have to pay for a sitter AND pay astronomical school taxes every year. I think if that’s the case, the people with school aged children should get a tax break to help cover for child care. I’d sign that petition if it came down to it
school is important for learning and growing as a human, but it’s also child care for working parents. Especially when they are too little to stay home alone. I can’t see spending $1200 a month on property tax (which is mostly school taxes) and then have to shell out $$$$ for child care on their days off. It’s going to KILL the middle class

We are so pissed we didn’t make the move last year when we were really considering it. We had some houses to look at in NC
We figured the housing market was getting better and better here, we would wait another year to 2 and see where the prices were headed. There goes that theory. Screwed

That would be the easiest thing to do if you prefer your own lesson plans over theirs.

That would be the easiest thing to do if you prefer your own lesson plans over theirs.
That's what I'm thinking. My oldest will be going into 6th grade. I'm thinking it will be a large work load with multiple subjects. I hear the older grade have alot of their work due at the end of the day. I think some don't realize some parents are still working outside of the house.

I speculate it may be half days or alternate days. Our district is in dire straights financially so there has already been talks of split sessions. With the 20% funding cuts Cuomo is talking I can’t imagine what it will become. No sports, music, or extras, buildings falling into disrepair, I don’t even want to think about it. We’ll have to think about getting out of state, but I don’t know where it’s better or if we will even be able to sell the house....

Yeah I was going to ask the same thing. Homeschooling is a huge commitment. I could never do that while working full time.
What about online schooling?
It's public and no cost....done online but taught by certified teachers who are accredited for your state.
I think it's called K12 or something.
Someone I know on Florida has her son doing it...he started in Sept, prior to this whole disaster. But now it worked out because for him, it's no change

I hate that Cuomo makes it sound like nothing else in the whole wide world matters and we all have no right to be upset about anything as long we don't have the virus. Easy for him to say. I would happily take my family & leave NY, but for now we are kind of tied here. I think many families will be leaving.

Yes, if I was living in Gracie Mansion and had special privileges like having people over for dinner who didn’t live with me, then maybe I could ride this out too. Honestly I was singing his praises but I’m starting to internally revolt. And if I am, then others are.
All I want, all I need, is for my disabled son’s special school to reopen in July. I’ll live under my bed for the rest of my life if i could just make that happen. Seeing my boyfriend, or any adult, would be nice too. But just praying for summer session right now....

Like I said in another thread, you know it's bad when you prefer DiBlasio to Cuomo. This morning, DiBlasio announced the NYC numbers, said 2 indicators went down, 1 went up, but it was still overall a positive day and we are definitely making progress. One hour later, Cuomo: everything is trending downward, BUT IS STILL A HORRIBLE DAY. DON"T BE STUPID AND ARROGANT. STAY HOME UNTIL I TELL YOU THAT YOU CAN LEAVE, AND DON'T YOU DARE QUESTION ME. EVER.
He enrages me.

I was talking to my friend about this today. I have a first grader and a son in pre-k. He goes to kiddie academy and my 1st grader did aftercare there. As of now we are paying $25/week just to hold our spot. If my husband goes back to work and schools have not reopened it’s going to cost me $500/week to send them there. Which will make it barely worthwhile to work. Obviously we would do it and hope it’s a short term thing. But it will definitely create a financial burden...

He also started talking about fixing the homeless issue in NYC since it effects the plan to sanitize the subways every day. A problem that has been around for decades, but sure lets add that to the list of things to do in the middle of a crisis.

Wuhan, where this all started was closed completely for 79 calendar days. When it reopened, schools remained closed. Schools in New York have been closed for 34 school days, (44 calendar days) and New York has been "paused" for 28 business days (37 calendar days).
Watching all the places overseas that have reopened and then watched their numbers rise, and their death tolls increased is heartbreaking. Watching the daily death toll in New York is heartbreaking. I would hate to watch it go back up because we took our foot off the brake without watching where we were going.

I'm curious what the announcement will bring as well. I don't get the complaints about short term decisions bc if he had to decide long term we know everything would have been closed through the year from day one. I'm wondering if maybe he'll reopen some upstate schools this year so they can be the guinea pigs in figuring out how to achieve social distancing in the school setting.
I could see high school and possibly middle school maybe becoming a hybrid of school and distance learning. Let the kids go every other day and work from home the opposite days so the schools and busses are half as full. I think elementary you can at least keep the kids in their classrooms for the most part. I do hope specials and electives continue bc that's a lot of jobs for one and kids need those outlets. Sports and clubs on the other hand maybe can wait a year as much as that sucks for the kids.

That's my biggest problem with this. This is going to result in women leaving the workplace in droves because one of 2 things will happen:
1. Women are already paid less on average so if one parents is going to quit to care for their child because school is closed and they have no choice, it's likely to be the mother.
2. Childcare is more likely to fall to women so those working from home will be unable to adequately tend to her career while also caring for her children.
