Re: What food are you buying/stocking?

I was at the grocery store yesterday and didn't really buy too much beyond my usual grocery list.

I figure, if we lose power, I have a freezer full of meat anyway, so we will grill that up to eat.

Also usual pantry items, cereal bars, bread, etc. Most of this stuff I already have on hand.

If they do a mandatory evacuation, I am sure DH will stay again and insist DS and I go up to my parents house Upstate.

We are a couple blocks South of Montauk Hwy.

Soup
Pasta
Rice
frozen burgers, hot dogs
tortillas (have frozen meat & fixings to make tacos)
tuna
sunflower butter (instead of peanut butter)
crackers
cereal
shelf stable milk & soy milk (mainly for the kids)
cookies
chips
pretzels
fruit
juice boxes
water

It's pretty much stuff we'd eat normally, or kids will take to school for snack/lunch. I figure I can cook on our gas range or grill if it comes to that, but for the past week I haven't done my normal shopping of perishables and using what we have frozen so that I don't throw out a whole freezer full of meat again.

My DS is allergic to peanut so we can't get things like granola or power bars.

Normal grocery shop with slightly more dry foods (cereal, crackers, tuna) than usual.

Re: What food are you buying/stocking?

We bought a good amount of canned pasta with meat that would be easy to heat up with sterno if need be . Basicly anything canned with alot of protein (beans, tuna etc.) we stocked up on. Of course water and batteries. Luckly we had a large stockpile of candles & lighters/matches from Irene. I also had alot of sterno cans already from then too so i picked up a new rack & foil pans to cook in. We didnt get affected by Irene last time, didnt even lose electric so with all this hype it is hard for me to take it serious but then again, for the sake of my kids we got to be prepared.

Question: Does anyone know if it still safe use a stove top gas range if the electric goes out in a storm or can that be a hazard? I got sternos like i said but I dont wanna waste my time if i can safely cook on my stove burners.

I went yesterday, but I had been laxing on the food shopping lately so I knew I had to do a major trip. That said, I dont think I bought much more in preparation for the storm per se other than a few extra cans of soup, mac and cheese, pasta, tuna, and canned veggies. We already get bottled water, batteries, and flashlights/candles. I wouldnt go too nuts, but get enough to get you through a few days.

We lost power for 5 days during Irene and I used my gas stove top. I just had to light it with a match. I'm assuming it was safe, because I'm still here :)
I even used it to toast a bagel--I put the bagel on a skewer and rotated it over the flames. Desperate times call for desperate measures ;)

I love the bagel over an open fire idea!Chat Icon

I have done this too (used the gas range with a match). Just take care not to let the room fill with gas (have match ready)

I didn't really stock up bc we have a freezer filled with precooked or frozen meats that will get cooked on bbq if needed.

Got a good amt of bread & milk to keep us going & always have bottled water

Re: What food are you buying/stocking?

for those of you that say you would grill on the bbq... i'm just curious where your bbq is. i mean, it's not like you can go outside in a hurricane to grill up some meat. we moved ours into the garage yesterday bc we don't want it to get damaged - but dh puts the propane tank in the shed, he doesn't want it attached to the house.

i didn't stock up, so to speak. i needed to go food shopping anyway, so i did last night. i bought extra snacks - chips, pretzels, cookies etc (healthy i know Chat Icon). we have peanut butter, jelly, tuna, bread, english muffins, cereal and a few cases of bottled water in the house - but we always have those things.

i think they mean after the storm is over and if we are without power for up to a week like with Irene, not BBQ during the storm. Chat Icon

Re: What food are you buying/stocking?

We got chips, cereal, shelf stable milk and soy milk, pb and j, some bread, dried fruit, nuts, and some canned stuff. We bought like a camping stove, but come to thinik of it, is there a high probabilty of losing stove gas?

I didn't stock up on anything. I didn't do my regular food shopping bc I don't want to add to what's in the fridge in case we lose power. I just got bread, cereal, crackers, pretzels, bananas, apples, oranges. We have peanut butter, jelly, nuts and beans, pasta and sauce in the pantry.

Our patio is pretty sheltered. South facing fence along one side that is also somewhat sheltered by the neighbor's house on the south, with a west fence that has bushes to help break a direct wind, and our house on the north side. We don't have a garage or shed so we move the grill in a corner by the fence, wedged between the fence and a pine tree. Very little has moved around back there during Irene or other strong winds.

During the storm we would just eat what's available in the house that we can eat cold if there is no power. Once the storm clears then we would use the grill for cooking since our stove is electric.

We have plenty of beer, hard cider and wine but no chips Chat Icon

Gonna head out in a bit and get some chips and dip...some ready-made cookie dough...other munchies too.

It's different for DH and I though...for one thing, we don't have to worry about kids, and for another, we are in Queens and live right off an avenue that has supermarkets, drug stores, a 7-11, etc. And a liquor store. Chat Icon

We already have the staples onhand...bread, peanut butter, canned soups, dark chocolate.

Maybe, and I had that plan for Irene....But honestly when you are sitting in the dark after the storm all you want to do is get the hell out of the house in the evenings. So when the storm was over we went to restaurants and our food went bad. This time I bought just enough until the storm is over then I will be getting the hell out of the house....unless I still have electric.
