Re: What gifts would you get your 8 yr old son?
I've been bugging DS a couple of times to come up with a list, but I haven't gotten anything from him yet. He's 8. He just got a Pokemon game for his 3DS.
I may get him a telescope. He's really interested in astronomy.

The best things I got for my son was a trampoline with netting, a bike, a ride on for bigger kids (but my 2 year old loves it too), DS, scooter, bike/scooter ramp etc. He loves magic kits, llego kits, science kids etc but I hate things with little piece b/c I am always the one who cleans them up!

My DS wants anything that has to do with WWE and he wants a laptop (not happening kid ) He also wants a 3D DS, which I will probably trade in his old DS for to save some bucks.

Ds's a bit younger, he wants video games and a bogo pogo stick....which I think really means, he wants a broken arm

My son will be 8 early January and hasn't really said anything this year on what he wants? Every year we usually get a list, but this year NOTHING!!!

Last night, DS said he wants a nice pepper mill... We have a cheap plastic one, but he would like a nicer one. And not a battery-powered one, either. He said the hand cranked ones make you stronger......
so, there you go.... the perfect gift for any 8 year old... a wooden, manual pepper mill....

My younger son is 8. He is getting a remote control car, Gordion's knot puzzle/game, a tactical vest, some play grenades & an army gun, plastic army men and wooden train tracks that he requested. He'll get a new nutcracker to add to his collection too. We will also get pajamas, an ornament, some snacks, some hygiene products and maybe a couple of shirts (he has a TON of jeans.. ).

I got my son an iPod Touch last year (he was 9). It was a long and well thought out discussion between my husband and I. Ultimately we decided that he was mature enough to handle the responsibility and we were comfortable with the amount of 'connectivity' he would have.
Personally I would not get a phone for my kid because I just don't see the reasoning when he's with me most of the time. Also - I don't want to spend a monthly service charge for a kid who's telephone conversations consist of "Hey, yeah. What's up? Okay.... Mom can Mark come over tomorrow? Okay. Yeah. See ya." The iPod allows him to have music, play games and surf the internet. I get full access and check on it often to make sure that I always know what he is up to.
It's totally an individual thing - I honestly don't tihnk there is a solid 'right or wrong' - you know your kid and you know if either of these things are appropriate for his level of maturity and responsibility.

Re: What gifts would you get your 8 yr old son?
My son just turned 9 and out of the blue he asked for an ipod touch for his bday. I never even heard him mention one but some friends at school have them and he wanted to be able to download apps and play games. We don't have a game system but he has a DS and plays it on and off. I wasn't about to buy a brand new one bc although he's good with the DS, I have no idea if he'd take care of it, it was really a surprise request. I considered buying one on CL but my brother had a 3rd generation touch that he gave me for him. Now that I've seen him with it, I can see the appeal at the age. He has about 10 games on it and he's not obsessive over it so I have no issue with it. He is not allowed to take it to school, I know some kids bring them, which I am against. This one doesn't have a camera & I disabled the Wifi setting.
Now did I want to pay $200-300 for one? No he probably wouldn't have gotten one brand new any which way bc I was not sure of his care of it or if I liked him having one at all. I'd consider my son sort of behind vs his peers in electronics ownership so I know that many kids his age have them.
I do also research the games he wants to download.
