What is a "holiday tree"??
Is this something new??? I heard on the news this morning that the holiday tree went up at Lincoln Center. Please pardon me if I sound naive, but is there any difference between a Christmas tree & a Holiday tree??

Re: What is a "holiday tree"??
What I don't get is there is no Holiday Menorah, bc this beautiful display is what it is: a symbol of a specific holiday.

Re: What is a "holiday tree"??
Nope.. No difference. It is just the politically correct world we live in now.
I would totally understand if a Jewish person got offended if someone called a menorah a holiday candlestick.
There are meanings & symbols behind things like a Christmas Tree & a Menorah.
To change the name of a religious article such as the things mentioned above is offensive- at least to me.
We get into the same discussion every year about this- it will never change- just like any discussion about politics or religion. Everyone has their opinions. Someone is bound to get offended by something.
You just cant please everyone.

I can't seem to find anything about why they changed it to a "holiday tree". Does anyone know if there was a specific incident?

Re: What is a "holiday tree"??
funny thing is - the tree doesn't actually have anything to do with christmas. It's a pagan symbol that was adopted over the years. Nothing to do with Christ, Christianity or Catholicism. So to get offended because it's associated with Christmas is bogus, IMO.

Re: What is a "holiday tree"??
At Christmas, What's In a Name? Effort to Rename Christmas Trees "Holiday Trees" Sparks DebateFrom WNT Share As millions of Americans prepare for the holidays, a new front in the culture wars has erupted over holiday semantics.
On Capitol Hill, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., has asked that the giant, decorated spruce that sits on Capitol grounds in December, which has been referred to as the "holiday tree" for the past several years, be renamed the "Christmas tree."
Vote: Holiday Tree vs. Christmas Tree? It's an issue that resonates with other Americans as well.
"I think that it's inappropriate that the name was changed to Christmas tree," said one person interviewed by ABC News.
"Christmas represents Christ, and this country was actually built on the religion of Christianity," said another.
In Boston, city officials created an uproar after briefly trying to change the "Christmas tree" into the "holiday tree."
"It'll be a Christmas tree as long as I'm around," said Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.
The tiff over tree titles might strike some as just semantics, but the fights raise real questions about the role of religion in public life.
When the Rev. Jerry Falwell heard about the Boston tree, he and a group of 700 Christian lawyers, affiliated with the conservative civil liberties group Alliance Defense Fund, threatened to sue.
"Anyone who does not acknowledge that this secularization is in progress and that Christmas is under assault is not being honest or is under-informed," Falwell said.
But all those lawyers may be just ornamental. If they had sued they probably would have lost, says Douglas Laycock, a constitutional law professor at the University of Texas at Austin.
"This is a publicity trick," he said. "And it's a fundraising tool."
Governments Can Name Trees as They Choose Governments, he says, are free to call a tree whatever they want.
They're also free -- as happened in Maplewood, N.J., last year-- to tell high school bands they can't even play instrumental versions of Christmas carols, and -- as happened in Chicago -- to make the lyrics of traditional songs more generic.
On the other hand, governments are also allowed to place nativity scenes in the city square, as long as they're surrounded by secular symbols. It's known as the "two plastic reindeer rule."
As for Christmas trees, the Supreme Court has said they are sufficiently secular to stand alone.
So in other words, sometimes a tree is just a tree.
ABC News' Dan Harris filed this report for "World News Tonight."

Christmas is associated with Christ.
Perhaps is it now a symbol of christmas...but it has nothing to do with christ.
Dan is right, it is a pagan symbol that was adopted (like many, many of the christian symbols) some years ago.

Christmas is associated with Christ.
again, it's a pagan symbol that was adopted over the years. If you look back through Christianity and Catholicism, there are no trees. It was something adopted.
Yes, it is associated with Christmas as it has evolved over the years, but the tree itself has nothing to do with the actual meaning of Christmas, that being the birth of Christ

So when you see a green tree with lights and ornaments, what do you associate it with?
No one is saying that Christ came out of the womb holding a tree.
ETS: You are right that this is an adapted tradition, but being so, I grew up associating it with such. 28 years after I was born, all of a sudden I should not assume it is a Christmas tree anymore? It is now considered a "holiday tree"? Give me a break.

i call it a Christmas tree, because as i stated, the pagans adopted it as a christmas tradition.
My point is that for people to get offended and call it a holiday tree because they might not celebrate the birth of Christ, is ridiculous, as the tree has nothing to do with it.
Now, it would be one thing if they put a nativity scene in Lincoln Center - that's one thing.

i agree - it should be called a christmas tree - and my point is i think getting offended over its presence and changing the name is ridiculous
