Re: What is security like in your childs school?
DH works at a middle school and he told me that no doors are locked anywhere. Anyone can walk in. Scary.

Just wondering.
At my sons elementary school, you press a button and get buzzed right in.
Is that pretty standard??
same in our school. You have to ring the doorbell and they buzz you in. Then you have to sign in at the front desk.

Same at my kid's school. Makes me nervous now, because it is so easy to get in.

All the doors are locked. There is a security guard at the main door where visitors enter. This is in a Long Island public elementary school.

What is security like in your childs school?
At the school I work in anyone can walk in and they have security at the front desk where the person signs in/shows ID. Anyone COULD walk in and shoot the person at desk and then whoever they want.
Working in a school I can tell you it is VERY hard to keep it air tight secure. There are so many doors and it is very easy to sneak in a school if one really wants to...

Re: What is security like in your childs school?
After the school day begins, all doors in my school are locked. People need can only enter after being buzzed in. At that point, they can only enter the main office.
We also have a school resource officer (state trooper) as well as security guards who are all off duty or former police.
Even with all this security though schools can only be so safe. Kids are constantly propping open doors so they can get back in after lunch. They will also let in other kids who knock on the door.

Re: What is security like in your childs school?
My kids are in private school. There are 2 security guards at the door. They wear suits and hold walkie talkies. I've always thought they look very professional and they're on top of things. Yesterday though I realized they wouldn't have changed anything if there were a gunman. Devastating.

Re: What is security like in your childs school?
My Mother works at a local HS. Security I always thought was pretty tight, there are security guards at the front door, all other doors are locked, you have to show ID, etc.
Because my Mom works there (and I went there), they know me and let me in, no questions asked.
That is why they let the shooter in, they knew who he was. It could have easily have been a parent that they knew, who had a child in the school who had done this.
How can it really be prevented? No one allowed in the building (other than front), metal detectors?

Re: What is security like in your childs school?
you know, i work in a school and we were all talking ab out this last night.
the sad thing is, no matter what kind of security there is, if someone is going with the intent of killing, there is probably no stopping them. they'll take everyone out on the way. we talked about armed guards at our front doors but whos to say they wouldnt be shot on the way in?
its so scary and sad and awful..there are no amount of words to describe this situation.

They are saying the gunman was a teacher at the school, a reasonable person would have let him in.
Not true.

Re: What is security like in your childs school?
Something my school did in the past 2 years was require that inside doors be locked as well. We have key fobs to enter our rooms, but without a fob, you can't enter most spaces in the building. And when we go into a lockdown, fobs are disabled and no one can enter these spaces without the administrators fob.

That's not what I read. He forced his way into the school. No matter what security is like in a school, if a gunman wants in, he'll get in. He'll just shoot his way in.

All doors are locked. You have to buzz to be let in but someone is at the door looking to see who it is before you come in (if they are not at the door, you have to speak through the intercom to state why you are there). Not perfect but at least it's something.
This is like our school as well however they have a trooper who is usually there. Never thought i'd appreciate that sight more than Santa at this time of year.
