An undercover cop kept me from being tossed onto the train tracks at Jamaica station years ago when I got mugged. I think that is pretty good.

Saved my life.
About 14 years ago I went swimming with my boyfriend and he got a leg cramp and panicked and kept holding me under the water and while it took 2 lifeguards to get him under control, a stranger on a boogie board took me on his board while I was unconcious and swam me to shore.

I can't think of any particular thing a stanger has done for me, but I guess I just love it and get a big smile when someone in passing will stop me to say what beautiful children I have. Ok, so it may be a generic statement people say, but still, it makes me feel good

When I was in high school, I forgot my bus pass and a stranger paid my fare.

Someone dug my car out when I was stuck once. It was one of those storms that came out of nowhere and I had on heals and a skirt. A nice guy came by and really helped me out!

nothing "grand". a woman in front of me in line once gave me a coupon at Macy's. or sometimes people will let me cut them in line at the grocery store or Target if I only have 2 or 3 things.

So many amazing women on here signed up for free cans of Ava's prescription formulas and sent them to us because our insurance will not cover it and it costs us a small fortune to feed her. I will still never be able to fully express my gratitude for that.

When I was in college I didn't have a credit card and I had taken out $400 (my daily max) from the ATM to pay for a housing deposit. My grandmother had cancer, and my father called me to tell me there was a sudden change in her status and that she had only hours to live. I couldn't withdraw cash, had no CC, and needed to fly from Boston to NYC on the last shuttle at 9:30. I took a cab to the airport while crying hysterically. The cabdriver asked me what was wrong, I told him my story and when we got to the airport he followed me in and offered to pay for my flight. Luckily the airline workers were able to make other arrangements for me to get on a flight, but I will never forget how generous a total stranger was willing to be on one of the worst days of my life.

this might not seem like much, but for the A train its a big deal...
i almost passed out on the train..it was hot (im always HOT) and i was holding on to the gross pole and squating
some lady gave up her seat for me

When I had to fly home on a 6 hour flight for my dad's funeral, the ticket agent must have seen it was a bereavement ticket, because she bumped me up to first class.
It made a very difficult time much easier.

The other day DH and I went to the city for Dr. appt. he was in the car waiting..I came out the car would not start some woman pulled up next to me us and said she was not sure but she may have jumper cables..I said great can you look? She looked she did not have them...I know Iknow she offered thats what counts??? i guess!

I've had a lot of people help out at different times. I've had my tire changed when I was late for an interview. I've had cops let me out of a tickets - one that I definitely deserved.
Probably the thing that sticks out most was when I was pregnant on 9/11 when the whole thing plus the walking finally got to me. I sat down on a water hydrant to catch my breath. I was surrounded by strangers that were trying to help me, offering food & water. I didn't need any help. It will forever be in my mind how strangers were willing to do anything to help each other.
Word of advice: Don't ask your DH. When I said "What is the best thing a stranger has ever done to you?" He couldn't stop snickering. To the stranger that "helped" my DH out, um...he thanks you.

but that is not the nicest- the nicest thing a stranger ever did for me was wait 45 minutes and be late for work b/c I left the keys to my car in the truck lock while I went food shopping!

This sounds stupid of me but it worked out in the end. When I was *cough* wasted one night at the Shore and could not walk the half mile home...a stranger gave me a ride home. I ended up dating him for 6 months. 
eta: I forgot the most important story, lol. A stranger overheard me talking to a friend about needing a new place to live. He said, "I am looking for a roommate." For some reason I trusted him and moved in. A couple of weeks later his band was practicing at the house. The drummer is now my DH.
