What is the deal w/ Fast Pass + ? Mine 'opens' tomorrow .
How does this work? Do I REALLY plan my whole day 2 months in advance??? I swear, Disney 'vacation' has now become a stressful job !!

Yes. Crazy right? We are going in September for the 1st time. The amount of planning makes me nauseous.
You reserve your 1st three ahead of time- and once you've used those you can get more in the park (starting soon.)
There are plenty of blogs that will help you choose. I like wdwprepschool.com

You don't have to use it. We found it was helpful, but we just chose 3 things the girls would like. We did a princess meet and greet, belle story time and something else. It rained all day so we only did one thing, and I know you have boys, I'm just giving you an example.

Re: What is the deal w/ Fast Pass + ? Mine 'opens' tomorrow .
I did mine about a month ago. I tried to plan a rough sketch of each day and went from there. For instance, one day in MK I knew I wanted to cover Fantasyland in the morning and Tomorrowland after that. So I picked the 3 rides that I thought we would need FP the most for and took a guess at around what time I thought we might be there.
I will say though that I went through our plan again over the weekend and made a bunch of changes. I had no problem switching my times around. If you are going at a less busy time, I wouldn't worry too much about getting it perfectly right the first time you go in.

No you don't have to do it. But the popular items might not be available when you get closer or down there. You could get away with not doing it before they opened it up to off site guests but now that it is opened to everyone I would loosely plan. I pick days based on recommendations of which park is best to visit each day. Do you stay in the parks or take a break? If you take a break schedule them late morning early afternoon. You can change them as much as you want but at least you have some and won't waste them on rides that are not needed.
Things like the roller coasters, Peter Pan, Anna and Elsa meet and greet, the new mine car ride (when released), splash mountain, will run out first. If there are times they might not be what you want.
Also unless you want A&E or mind car when it is released you can probably hold off until right before the 30 day mark when they open up to offsite visitors. I had no problem switching my times around but I am only at 31 days. Some times I wanted are no longer available.

What is the deal w/ Fast Pass + ? Mine 'opens' tomorrow .
I just learned about fast pass one day into my vacation and I did it all when I got there and just took the available times (and there were plenty) we waited on n lines. The first day we waited for an hour for a rollercoaster and I was losing it and we watched all the fastpass people go past us and have NO wait so we then used the app and did it..it was very easy and we got on all the rides we wanted. we literally did it an hour before going to Hollywood studios and got what we needed....one ride I even did while I was at the park that day.

I really wasnt pleased with the idea either. I asked around from "expert" friends & booked the rides I heard we'd like most. I got the app also & watched the wait times on rides & picked FP+ for the ones I noticed always had a wait. I figure worst case plans change & we don't use the reservation.
Now the dining ones scare me because it's show on time or be charged I got an e-mail about "Be Our Guest" lunch reservations but we not only had to pick a time but all 4 of us needed to order our meal 30 days in advance! I haven't even decided what to eat for dinner tonight.
I keep telling SO he's taking me on a cruise because I need a vacation from the Disney vacation...

Re: What is the deal w/ Fast Pass + ? Mine 'opens' tomorrow .
it is 3 rides per day, so if you have a park hopper and use up your fast pass at one park, you are waiting on lines at the next. It is also tiered, so you pick 1 type of ride from one section and then other 2 rides from another section.
I would download the app now and just take a look at the different parks and keep notes on which rides have a long wait time and then go from there.

You do not have to pre-order your meal for BOG lunch FP. I know bc I didn't. You CAN choose to (you can change what you order up until right before you check in) but it is not a requirement. It just saves you time. You just go in and tap to pay and sit. If you don't preorder you go right in, but then you have to stand online and use the kiosk to choose your meal and pay. I only have the FP but I have a button where I can place a food order anytime. So you can just FP and choose your meal that morning. You don't pay until you check in and can cancel the bog FP anytime.
The credit card guarantee is a pain but isn't new. They have had it for a while now at character and the most popular places like Ohana. Apparently though if some of your party show they don't charge. I booked fewer meals this year bc of it. It has made some places easier to get reservations bc people were holding multiple ADRs then not showing. Now more people can get in. But I am not a fan.

Actually it is 3 upfront then you can get more once you use the 3. Tiering right now is only in EPCOT and HS.
Right now you can reserve 3 in advance. Pick ones that are the most popular...then you can switch them as it gets closer. You can change them at any time IF there are any left.
Once you use your three you can go to a kiosk and choose another in the park you are in. So...if you go to HS in the morning you could pick 3. Then say you hop to EPCOT and go to a kiosk and pick another, and so on. Of course it will depend on availability too. But once you use your three the tiering ends and you can pick another tier one if you want so... Say you pick soarin after your three you can pick it again or say test track etc.
To make it easy go to easywdw.com hd has cheat sheet touring. He makes suggestions an which FP you should make.
Yes it is a pain but in some ways has some pluses. Say you don't want to hit rope drop...you can still get FPs to your favorite rides. This time we are going later in the morning/early afternoon to AK. We have FPs for things that will have long lines once we arrive. Also another positive is no running around the park to just get a FP. It is done in one place or ahead of time. You don't have to run across the park just to print a pass to come back hours later. You can arrange them around meals or whatever you want, vs return time is x but you have an ADR during that time. Now you just plan around your meal and pick a time accordingly.
I am not a big fan of the new system bc I used to get a lot of FPs but....I like that Zi got one for A&E without have yo worry about standby or running out of FPs before we get one. During busy time rides often gave out all their FPs by late morning.

No but you must link a ticket to make them in advance rather than at a kiosk same day.

Re: What is the deal w/ Fast Pass + ? Mine 'opens' tomorrow .
I thought I would hate FP+ since I was so used to the old system and using it to my best advantage, but I found using FP+ to be very freeing. In the past, you had to be at Hollywood Studios ar rope drop to have a chance at a Fastpass for Toy Story Mania. Now I can schedule a time convenient for me and sleep in that day if I want to. I suggest making fastpass+ selections for later in the day and using the early morning hours to ride standby on shorter lines.
I know it sounds crazy to book your day 2 months in advance but a little bit of planning goes a LONG way at Disney and you can always change plans as you get closer or on the fly. It's there for you to use not to trap you. For example, if you have a FP+ for a ride and you go to use your fastpass and see the line s short, you can change your fastpass for another attraction right then. it's really simple. As I said, i though I would hate it, but I really enjoyed using it. It's an adjustment but I think it can be good as I said because 1)You can sleep in and still get to enjoy the headliners and 2) If you do get up early you get more bang for your buck because you can ride the rides early with no waits, and then have fastpasses waiting for you in the afternoon without having to criss cross the park to line them up.

You don't have to pre-order your meal at Be Our Guest. It's one option. If you choose to pre-order (adn you can always pick your time 30 days out and then choose your meal a few days before), it hels you to skip one line while inside, making the wait shorter and the process faster. I know exactly what i would order at BoG so I would totally pre-order. (The potato leek soup is to die for!)

The new recommendations is to use the FPs earlier like late morning early afternoon bc as of Monday they let you get more once you use your three. But some are harder to get now that offsite guests can book 30 days out too. People said there were less choices day of since everyone can book ahead of time.

Just curious, has anyone actually been able to book the Mine Train ride under FP+? It's not coming up any of the days we are going to be there in June/July. Not sure if the FP's are gone, or if they haven't offered them yet

That is because it is not offered yet. The press event is the next few days. They have not had any soft openings yet nor announced an official opening date yet. Most are guessing they will make the announcement at the press event and at that time open FPs but it might not actually open for a while and only have soft openings in the near future. You should be fine to get one July...should be fine in June. We go soon so hoping we get on it.
