what is the first step in moving out of state?

We are seriously considering making a move. I dont even know where to start other than visiting ares that we may want to move to. But my job is global and there are openings in different cities, but I do not wnt to start the applying process because my house is not even on the market. Should we put our house on the market. It all seems so out of reach.

I would plan a few trips to said areas, where your job will have open positions and then see which you like the best. If you have kids look at the schools and recreation in the area. Look at overall cost to live, taxes, home cost and retained home value........

You don't want to put your house on the market and then not really want to move......

Good Luck!!

Figuring out where to live is definately the first step!
If you really have no idea where you want to go I'd make a list of what is important to you.. near a big city, near a beach, water, hote, cold etc. Then take a list of the states and start crossing off ones that don't appeal to you. Then I'd do research on websites about things like good schools, best places to live etc.

Research the area, then research the job market/available jobs/salaries.

Plan a trip there and look into housing. I recomend renting first, if you don't know the area, cause it will alllow you to learn where you do and don't want to buy.

Does it cost anything to put the house on the market? or maybe try and sell by owner first, to get a feel for how quick it would sell. Would you be losing money selling in this market?

I agree. We moved out of state and have rented for a year while we decided where to buy. We are now in contract.

Good luck!

Us too!
It's funny we were going to have a house built, last year, but the mortgages got tough and we pulled out. I AM SO GLAD WE DID! We found a better home, for better money, in a better location!!!

well thats the only kicker, we bought a fixer for a good price put about 40 grand in and I think we might lose a little of what we put in but still come out with what we put down so it would be a wash, except for the sweat equity.
