what is the LONGEST that a child should go without walking before thinking its a problem?
Gillian was just 15 months. She stands solo and once in a blue moon takes a step but still will not walk. She is sooooo cognitively there. Her feet are correct, her legs are strong...WTH is going on? Should I be doing something? More, less? Help!

some are faster than others. My gf's kids (she has 3; preggo with her 4th) all didn't even crawl. They just got up and walked but they didn't do so until 16 months.
She may not have the confidence yet to get up and moving on her own. She will get there!
Have you tried walking with her holding her hands? does she pull up to stand?

she walks hand in hand and she will pull herself up. I feel like she is soooo late!

Ds and I went to lunch at Friendlys last week and there was a little boy 1 day older than DS (they're almost 17 months) and he didn't walk yet either.

Then she is fine. I would just be patient. she'll be walking, actually no, RUNNING, before you know it!

Both my kids took their time and didn't walk until 14 or 15 months. If they hadn't walked on their own by 18 months, I would have sought help.

Re: what is the LONGEST that a child should go without walking before thinking its a problem?
My DD will be 15 months on Friday and is still not fully walking yet. She will take 10-15 steps at a time, and will even walk across the room if I motivate her with something - but most of the time she will not use it as her preferred method of getting around. I don't know why she just doesn't want to do - b/c she shows that she can
Meanwhile she is a very advanced speaker and has about 30-35 words. So maybe that is just it - she is concentrating on other things?
p.s. I think our DDs are very similar b/c she was a late teether too.

I was so worried about Megan too!
She didnt even show signs of WANTING to walk until she was 14 months old. She took her first real steps at my grandmothers wake (I still think she was guiding her ) and within a month she was fully walking.
It wasnt anything else with her besides stubborness. She was smart enough to know that she got places faster by crawling and just continued to do so. One day she said, enough is enough. Stood up and walked all around. Now she is running. Dont worry..all children do things within their own time.

Re: what is the LONGEST that a child should go without walking before thinking its a problem?
my sister didn't walk until she was 16 months old - my mother and her ped thought it was because she is left handed and because my mom and everyone else did everything right handed/footed, she was confused.
i think if she is progessing everywhere else she is fine

On a positive note...she goes to sleep at 9 and wakes up at 10 am so I guess she is late on everything...both positive and negative...LOL

I also think its stubborness. She is sooooo there but just wont. I will stand her up , go across the room with a lolly and then she will lower herself and crawl to get the lolly.

Re: what is the LONGEST that a child should go without walking before thinking its a problem?
My mom told me I didn't walk until I was almost 2. She was worried, but the doctor told her I was fine and would walk when I was ready. She was convinced it was because I had two older siblings waiting on me One day, I just got up and started walking without notice.

Re: what is the LONGEST that a child should go without walking before thinking its a problem?
every child hits milestones at a different age my dds were young 8 1/2mths and 9mths but I really wish it was WAY WAY LATER my dd's problem is that she only has 2 teeth and all the other babies we know have a mouth full but I keep telling myself that every baby is different
and remember once they walk then they run and then its all over

She's fine....I didn't walk until I was 16 months either (mainly b/c my mom carried me everywhere & I was never on the floor--she told me).
My niece too was later...at 15 months.
I wouldn't worry until maybe 18 months & then bring it up w/ her ped.

Both of my sons could NOT walk unassisted until they were 18 months old.
Then at 18 months, like a flip of a switch, they took their first step...then started running.
Before you know it, your little one will be giving you a run for your money.

Re: what is the LONGEST that a child should go without walking before thinking its a problem?
Honestly she probably can walk..she is just being cautious.
Ariel didnt walk until she was 15 months. True Ariel has "issues" but all her other gross motor milestones were reached at the average/earlier age. She is just a cautious child. She didnt do that drunken sailor thing once she knew how to walk. She walked well...she just chose to wait to do it until she could do it without falling. She used to crawl across the livingroom floor at 10 months and literally just stand up in the middle of the floor (not pull up just stand up) and stay there watching TV. She would maybe take a step or bend down to pick up a toy BUT SHE WOULD NOT WALK. The PT therapist said she could of walked if she wanted to (physically) but she wasnt ready yet.
Especially if her other milestones were met well within the average range I would wait until about 18 months before starting to voice any concerns. (easier said than done )

Re: what is the LONGEST that a child should go without walking before thinking its a problem?
DS will be 14 months on Sat. and he is not walking. We do walk around as he holds my hands and we "practice" daily. Our ped. said if he's not walking by 15 months we will start talking about PT. DS doesn't/hasn't crawled either--he "Swims" to where he wants to be. We have another child in the family who didn't walk until almost 16 months. Gilly will be fine.

Re: what is the LONGEST that a child should go without walking before thinking its a problem?
Kevin was 16 months before he even showed an interest in it. Jack was walking for a good month before him, but Kevin would crawl around. Then one day he just started walking. Now the kids runs faster then Jack.
I think for him it was stubborness and laziness.
I probably would have really started to worry around 18 months.
