What is the point of a "half birthday?"
I have never heard of this, but saw a half-birthday cake on Pinterest.
Is this a thing?

If this is a thing, do you only get half a gift?

Ahhh it's pinterest. They also arrange kid's lunch into different animal shapes each day.

I don't know a single person who has ever celebrated their half birthday.

Okay now that I get! Stuck in between Christmas and New Years must suck! I'm a Thanksgiving baby myself, but it actually works out better since the family is all together anyway.

Silly Pinterest!
Though a quick look at the calendar has made me realize that my half birthday is a few days away...
thank you, Pinterest, for giving me an excuse to buy a cupcake next week.

I've always known my half birthday and acknowledged it to myself but never ever thought to celebrate it lol. Besides, DH's birthday is on my half birthday so it's all about him.

Not to get off topic, but I always see these animal shapes too. Who does this? This is worse than the over-the-top elf-on-the-shelf mommies. I mean, I love my DS to death but he's impressed if I throw in some Angry Birds graham crackers along with his PB&J

I see those things on there and I think, "that's cute!" and I pin it. As if I really would have the patience/skill to do it.
...and let me tell you -- once you do anything cutesy or creative like that for your kid(s), it seems to become an obligation.
(I'm still having to make Mickey Mouse face-shaped pancakes. )

Ohhh I could imagine! I won't lie, when I was a kid, I was a really picky eater. (Still am! ) I wouldn't eat bread crust so my mom would cut off the crust before she put my sandwich in my lunchbox. On some holidays, she would cut the sandwich out with a large cookie cutter in a holiday shape- a christmas tree or pumpkin or something. That alone STILL impresses me! She never added any of those crazy details though because really? Ain't nobody got time for that!
Half the things on pinterest I look at and go WHY?

Re: What is the point of a "half birthday?"
Also can't you just picture the psycho pinterest moms spending half an hour crafting those little animal dioramas.....
("Mom can you play with me?" "NO GODDAMIT CAN'T YOU SEE I AM SCULPTING AN OCTOPUS OUT OF RICE!!")
....then the kid pushes it away and goes "I DON'T LIKE BROCCOLI!"
Yeah, really worth the trouble.

I did a half birthday for my son. It was fun, we did half a cake and half of everything. My brother actually got him a gift and he only received half of it lol. So it's a hippo that comes with 6 balls and he only gave him 3 of the balls. He did give him the rest like a week later, but he just wanted to make fun of me for having a half birthday party.

My personal faves are the ones that you see over and over again but the descriptions and/or names change.

Re: What is the point of a "half birthday?"
i only know about it from high school...we would decorate our friends' lockers on their birthdays....but the summer birthday girls never got the chance...so it was big in our HS for summer birthday girls to get their locker decorated on their half birthdays...
but that's it - wrapping paper and a balloon...no gifts or anything! haha

Re: What is the point of a "half birthday?"
I don't really think it is a thing. But I have seen a lot of people do just a cake no gifts (think small homemade cupcake or dunken hines cake nothing fancy) to celebrate a 6 month mile stone/ half birthday but never after that. Never heard of an adult doing this.
I know it was mentioned in both my girls' preschools and kindergarten classes that a child with a summer birthday can celebrate their 1/2 birthday so they don't feel left out.

Re: What is the point of a "half birthday?"
I love the idea of half birthdays! Any excuse to celebrate!
The only person I know IRL who celebrates them is my friend. Her daughter has cancer and they celebrate her monthly birthdays in a small way - and her half birthday and actual birthday in a big way. It makes her feel good to say she is 26 in half birthdays because she might not actually make it to 26 years old.
