Re: I mean, seriously
I was just going to post this! This morning there were all these listings and one flake hasn't even fallen I mean come on, it's only expected to be 3-7" and it's not even going to really start until tonight.
When did we (as a society) become such pansies in the snow?
It's 7" people not 7 feet, deal with it!

Re: I mean, seriously
I think people were more worried about the driving conditions they're predicting, rather than the snow. According to the reports I heard and read, there was supposed to be snow, mixed with sleet, causing slush, which makes driving dangerous. Schools may close, or dismiss early based on the road conditions. Better safe than sorry!

Re: I mean, seriously
At the school I was student teaching at, they stayed open once when most other schools closed. Driving home, a bus slid on the ice and barely missed hitting 2 kids. The kids had to dive out of the way. So, I think it is better safe than sorry.

OK, Don. I was going to post the below but I was worried about getting a lashing from you!
I just got off the phone with my sister and my nephew's schools are closed in anticipation of the snow.
OK, I got it off my chest! I feel so much better now!

operative words there are "supposed to be"
hey, if the conditions are bad, close early
but come on, BEFORE the storm starts??

Re: I mean, seriously
Here in NJ they announce school closings the day before it snows.
I grew up in CT and LI and I can't ever remember having a snow day unless there were multiple feet of snow on the ground.

Re: I mean, seriously
I think some schools do it as a safety precaution as well as give parents time to plan for early dismissal. Unfortunately for me, I never had this as a kid but I'm glad I won't be driving home with buses later today.

Re: I mean, seriously
I think that ever since the one bus driver claimed she couldn't get up the hill on Adrirondeck...(sorry for spelling) and dropped of a 6 year old by himself to walk up the hill...it was night time by the time the kid got home...and he was freezing and too little to walking alone on a dark hilly road... schools are making every effort ot make sure that every kid gets home safe.

Re: I mean, seriously
it's actually coming down pretty hard now.
i do agree though, that kids these days have it WAY easier than we did. to think we actually had to walk to the bus stop and participate in outdoor activities.

Re: I mean, seriously
I went to NYC schools and in the whole time I was in school NYC only had 2 snow days--- for the blizzard of 96, and that's funny because it was the one year I was in private school on LI and we had LOTS of snow days.
I wish they would close my college. I'm really worried about the drive, but I can't afford to miss class.

Re: I mean, seriously
Everyone has to remember also that some places on long island ( like where I live) its is ALL hills.. When your a parent and the school calls to let you know the buses are leaving early so they can drive slower you appreciate it.. you dont think " oh they got off easy"
