Actually it is due to the ice that is forming .. My father just called me from the Meadowbrook .... There IS 11 yes 11 Accidents
I am sure there will be a record amount of accidents today. I am not denying that.
When I am driving in conditions like this... I drive "preventively". I do not drive around or close to anyone I suspect is "driving nervous".
Yes nervous drivers in general suc*

I'm sorry... but cars going sideways is not due to slushy snow. Its due to BAD DRIVERS.

I am sure there are "hilly" parts of long island. But for the most part... Long Island is a "flat" county due to its proximity to water.
What I said was more an exaggeration than anything else.

Didn't say it was 4WD..drivers and yes some are probably due to bad drivers hence why we should be allowed to stay home in this weather. Not all were do to reckless driving

Ok... you win.
With that said... I now demand everyone thats incapable of driving in this "weather" to please STAY HOME!
Less drivers on the road means I get to where I am going that much quicker!

Re: I mean, seriously
I'm such a nervous snow driver!!! Luckily we live in an area that has a shuttle service (the stop is directly across the street from our house!) that goes right to the train station. And the train stops directly behind the building I work in. So days like this, I train it in.

I am in Plainview and we are closing the day care early. Parents are saying that in other places it is fine but this area is horrible. My Mailman just said the same thing. Plainview is very icy!

But these district have to make sure the safety of the children come first, or else there will be a lawsuit.

Re: I mean, seriously
If they have snow days left and weather conditions are predicted to be bad, why take a chance? ALOT of school children still ride buses, School buses do not handle well in slippery conditions.
Most times when we have a "snow" day or delayed start in my district it is because condtions will be bad during arrival or dismissal.

Re: I mean, seriously
Well, I just got home becasue my school had an early dismissal. The roads were pretty slippery, I have to say. I don't have a long commute (luckily) and I am an excellent driver in bad contitions (if i do say so myself) but I still had some troble in spots. not becasue i was rushing or nervous - but because the roads were slippery.
Please be careful everyone!

Well, I am in the city and have no idea what the roads are like on LI, but the flatness of Long Island has nothing to do with it proximity to water. It is flat because it is the stuff the glaciers dumped off and then when back and forth over again. That is why the north shore is so rocky at the beaches and the south shore is smooth sand. The south shore it outwash. Former Earth Science teacher here, I have to correct misconceptions!

You are exactly right. My district RARELY closes because it is flat and between 2 major roadways so we can almost always get the busses through.
However, we will also NEVER close early. The last time they closed early they had a child that didn't have keys to his house sit outside on his porch for hours until his parents came home because he didn't have a enough sense or had never been told to go home with a friend if this happened. Anyways the parents sued and won and for that reason we will NEVER EVER close early!
