does it bother you
when people use letters instead of words when typing i.e: y (you) r (are) 4 (for) etc...?
i know i don't always follow "proper" writing etiquette (all lowercase) but i just don't get the letters. maybe it is because i teach and i CAN'T STAND it when the students send me emails w/ this type of writing.

I can't stand it. Your students actually e-mail you using letters instead of words?

I use it occasionally & depends who I'm e-mailing. I don't do it here at work for business related e-mails.

Yes, it bugs me.
I don't see how not typing two extra letters ("u" instead of "you") is saving anyone all that much time.

i CAN'T STAND it when the students send me emails w/ this type of writing.
I use the abbreviations for non-professional stuff, like posting here or in emails to friends. But NEVER for work, and absolutely not for school (if I was attending).

Re: does it bother you
I can't stand it....like it was mentioned above it doesn't take that much extra time to type the whole word. I know for me it would take longer to translate english into the cryptic code of internet speak

Re: does it bother you
today's students have grown up with these abbrevations and shortcuts. they all have AIM and are Texting each other. Its so common to them that they don't think about it...
is this any different then when we say LOL, AFK, etc...?
as adults, we know when and how to use it but for a kids who grew up with this in mind, this is like there form of writing since so much of it is on the computer and cellphones.

which 1
on the internet, i shorthand some or most of the time... as a professional who sends out emails all day to various levels of management, you speak business. With a personal email, I suppose I guess it matters who you are talking to and the type of conversation.
i guess you can say, the internet has its own rules for some words
but going back to the students (young kids), if they continue learning and speaking with "internet talk" they will have a hard time growing up and adapting with the rest of the world.
