Using illegal drugs...
I was reading that Marijuana has been used for some patients who were in extreme pain and it helped them live longer.
This was a quote from the article...
"Each time the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled on medical marijuana, the justices have come down against allowing the sick and dying to use the drug to ease their symptoms and possibly prolong life."
Do you agree that the government should NOT allow you to use an illegal drug even for medical purposes?
My deep thought for the day...

Re: Using illegal drugs...
that is such a tough one. The problem is more moral then anything else. If you allow it for medicinal reasons then you are going to have open up a can of worms have people arguing about why it is ok from group and not the other. Granted the people being allowed are sick and in pain, but it would never be that easy to many variables there. And of course if it is just prolonging life then really why is it needed if the person is not going to be cured from it. Like I said moral and legal issue, and of course this is JMO

Re: Using illegal drugs...
i have never heard it "prolonging" life per say but it is widely used for pain and to help increase the hunger drive which i guess in a round about way can prolong life..
IMO ANYTHING that can be used to ease the pain of a terminally ill person...should be done.
I agree with the use for medicinal purposes

Me too. There is no harm to the person, if it is habit-forming, who cares? if no other medicine is working for the poor soul, I feel it is very selfish to not give them marijuana, if it works.

Re: Using illegal drugs...
They absolutely SHOULD be allowed to use an "illegal" substance like marijuana to ease their pain. It annoys me that marijuana is not medically legal for those who need it, however, more addictive, habit forming drugs ARE legal and for people with minor injuries and sicknesses. It does not make sense.

Re: Using illegal drugs...
I have a family member who suffers from extreme pain due to adult onset polio. She uses marijuana to alleviate the pain. She can barely walk and is mostly homebound so I support her use of it.

The government should not allow you to use "illegal" drugs for medicinal purposes or any other purpose.
What they should do is legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes, the same way the higher level controlled substances (ie morphine) are handled.
Bringing additional arguments, if the illegal substance was cocaineor heroin & it could ease the pain, does everyone feel the same?

Re: Using illegal drugs...
It is sad that in this country the government can deny a terminally ill patient a drug that could ease their suffering.

I am not sure it is used legally, though.
I voted on a state referendum for this when I lived in CA. I voted to support medicinal use of it, and it would be presrcibed by doctors. It was voted down, but law enforcement in some areas publicly said they would not enforce the law in this particular instance.

Re: Using illegal drugs...
From what I've gathered there are at least 9 states that have legalized the use for medicinal purposes. However there is a federal law that also makes it illegal.
Can't remember from law class, but I believe State laws supercede Federal.

Aaah, I should Google this, It would be interesting to see which states legalized it. I bet Vermont is one of them.
When this topic comes up, I always think of that Murphy Brown episode, where Jim Dial, the anchor goes out on the streets of Washington DC to find pot for Murphy, while she goes through chemo.

My brother had a close friend (older, more like a father figure) who suffered from lung cancer, and I remember that pot was the only thing that would ease his nausea.
So much red tape and complications for something that would really help people, yet when Congress wants to give itself a raise, it seems easy for them to do that.

I looked at that, and now it comes back to me, it did pass in CA, it was the federal issue that came up - I moved away shortly after that.

Re: Using illegal drugs...
I totally think it should be legalized for people that have terminal illnesses. There are many other harmful legal drugs that are available, that pot is nothing compared to them. IMO, if you have 6 months to live and you become a pothead, who cares? If it makes the last 6 months of that persons life tolerable, how could that be bad?

Re: Using illegal drugs...
DH has a family member who is homebound and in tremendous, almost daily pain from adult on-set polio that was contracted while she was a child.
There are days where she can barely move, especailly when the weather is damp.
The has told me she smokes marijuana to relieve her pain.
I can't judge someone who truly thinks they need it for pain as I don't know and can't imaine what it's like to have chronic pain.

Re: Using illegal drugs...
In terminal patients, the benefits far outweigh any "risks" that may be involved.
Why make someone into a criminal because they want to ease their pain and nausea from chemo for awhile?
Marijuana is a lot less harmful and addictive than percoset, vicodin, etc, and yet pharmacists give these out all the time. Why can't they prescribe marijuana?
