The government should not allow you to use "illegal" drugs for medicinal purposes or any other purpose.
What they should do is legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes, the same way the higher level controlled substances (ie morphine) are handled.
I agree.

Re: Using illegal drugs...
If you mean therapeutically and not recreationally, then yes I think they should be approved and made legal IF they are proven to be helpful.
The only thing is the FDA although far from perfect does garantee that certain criteria have been met when dealing with approved drugs. If you get bad weed, who ya gonna call??

Well, I don't think that marijuana should illegal. I think it should be controlled and taxed, like cigarettes and alcohol.
But since it's illegal, there should be an exception for those who use it for medicinal purposes.
Posted by nrthshgrl Bringing additional arguments, if the illegal substance was cocaineor heroin & it could ease the pain, does everyone feel the same?
This is something to ponder.

I think you have to weigh the risks and benefits like any drug. Some of the drugs on the market are SO harmful. Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, even prozac is basically a lite cocaine, not to mention morphine. If there were a benefit, they should do clinical trials like any drug and match it to the same criteria as any drug.

I agree that marijuana should be legalized for medicinal purposes but if it were cocaine or heroin, they are both so highly addictive their medical value would be moot.
They did develop a pill that is a form of THC, one of the major active ingredients in marijuana for use with cancer patients. Unfortunately, the pill did not have the same benefits as actually smoking marijuana which is still illegal.

Our govt needs to think about this.
WASTE money chasing kids selling MJ and putting them in jail, or GET money on a tax rate similar to cigarettes. Um no brainer for me on this one

I agree wholeheartedly. I would even go so far as to say it should be legalized PERIOD - medicinally, recreationally.

IMO they are not wasting money . Regardless .. there is still going to be illegal use no ??? You honestly think that leagalizing for Medicinal purposes will stop others from using it (who don't need it ) .. so basically we will be chasing people.. stealing it anyway...

So true about some drugs on the market. Plus, it's easy to forget that cocaine was widely used (for medicinal purposes and recreational use) in the last half of the 19th century before its use was prohibited in the early 1900s. btw - I'm NOT saying that we should legalize harder drugs.
Back to the OT - I'll repeat, let those who suffer use marijuana if it eases their suffering.

I did not read through the whole thread, but...
If that were true then Codeine & Morphine would be off the market too. To me they can only be considered illegal if they require a prescription & do not have one. Do people abuse it, sure, but people abuse other LEGAL drugs like tobacco & alcohol.

If you legalize it fully and tax it like cigarettes, then people are not going to buy it on streetcorners when they can buy it in a drugstore, and it will keep people away from dealers who will push harder stuff. yeah people buy cigarettes and give them to kids, you can't stop that with anything, but eliminating the black market would help.
It is a waste, because most of the time they pick kids up on MJ charges, nothing comes of it, you can't even say justice is being served. I think it's a waste of law enforcement energy.

Re: Using illegal drugs...
When my brother had gone through Chemo 2 years ago, smoking marijuana releived many of the side effects from it, most especially the nausea.......and that was BAD.
IMO, it doesnt matter if its legalized or not.........there are zillions of people who smoke it in their house every day, most of them not ever caught.
And I feel whatever you do in your own home should be your own business. People are gonna smoke it anyway.....regardless if its for a health reason or not.

I agree....
My uncle underwent chemo for cancer twice...and he smoked both times to help with the nausea and pain and yes his Dr was fully aware of it, even advised him of whom he could go to for medicinal purposes ( and we all knew about it) ..it wasnt a secret , it was helping him live pain free.
My aunt who is battling MS also smokes it and I see nothing wrong with it.
To be honest though....If a cop caught them smoking it, they wouldnt go to jail. Truly if they told their story...these are professional people. My uncle is passed now but he was a federal employee.....my Aunt is a retired Lawyer and a college professor....I 100% believe law enforcement would leave them alone.

If there is something out there that can help anyone in extreme pain cope with their condition, then I am all for it. I'll bet anything that if any of the Justices had a family member that could benefit from medical Marijuana, they would look at it much differently.

IMO ANYTHING that can be used to ease the pain of a terminally ill person...should be done.
I completely agree.
I agree, but NEVER should they ever legalize it
Why do you think they shoudl NEVER legalize it? Many more people are killed from irresponsible use of alchohol than the use of marijuana every year.

They absolutely SHOULD be allowed to use an "illegal" substance like marijuana to ease their pain. It annoys me that marijuana is not medically legal for those who need it, however, more addictive, habit forming drugs ARE legal and for people with minor injuries and sicknesses. It does not make sense.
Completely agree!

I know a lot of cops that would thik differently... and they don't pick up kids using it 90% of the time ... they mostly pick up dealers .. my father is a NARC he is not looking for little BS users he is looking for the pushers.

ok when we speak of oxycontin .. that is for a different pain that I know Mj is not going to numb. And Mj is mostly used for side effects, not treatment of pain.

From what I've gathered there are at least 9 states that have legalized the use for medicinal purposes. However there is a federal law that also makes it illegal.
Can't remember from law class, but I believe State laws supercede Federal.
Actually, federal law always trumps state law if there is a conflict. Under state law (where medical marijuana is legal), the person cannot be prosecuted. However, since federal law trumps state law, the federal government could prosecute someone under federal law and the person could not use the state medical marijuana laws as a defense.
I think people should be able to use it for medicinal purposes.

Re: Using illegal drugs...
for the people who are granted permission to use it for medicinal purposes... where do they get it from? Do they get a RX and go to the pharmacy, or do they call up the local drug dealer??
