Re: Another LIW post
I had one person from my MIL's side of the family RSVP the day before the wedding...showed up at the wedding..didn't say congrats or ANYTHING to me or my DH and didn't give a gift.
No thank you for him...

Re: Another LIW post
Ahhh...just a typical day on LIW
My opinion: send a TY to non-gifters so they can read that it says thanks for coming, not thanks for the gift and know that you know that they didn't give a gift. Be the bigger person.
However in that case Stefanie - I think I would have done the same thing!

Re: Another LIW post
While personally I would not attend a wedding if I could not give a gift to the bride & groom ( unless is was a special circumstance like a sister or close friend and I was literally broke and they understood that ) I feel that everyone who attended should get a Thank you. You invited them to the party and they came. Gifts are not mandatory, but of course they are appreciated.
Of course there are some situations ( like the one Stefanie posted) where a guest doesn't deserve a thank you but I think that is something different all together.
eta. The fact that they did not even give a card though is rude IMO. They could have at least gotten a card giving their best wishes to the bride and groom. That would upset me more then the non gift.

Re: Another LIW post
I think a congratulations card is all that's required beyond that anything is a gift.
I don't really think a TY is necessary for people that attend without a gift, but it's not that big a deal to send one out for sharing the day since that's all that should really be expected.

Re: Another LIW post
Some of the people I really like didn't give us a gift-- do I hold it against them- no. Did I send a TY, no.
IMO TYs are for a formal thank you for a gift-- not for showing up-- as much as I would rather someone come, than not come-- they don't get a TY for no gift.
I thanked everyone for coming in our wedding programs.
ETA-- I did not receive any cards from my non-gifters. If I had gotten a card, I might have reconsidered.

I feel the opposite. I think a TY is a way of PERSONALLY thanking a person/couple/family for attending your special event and sharing the day with you. You just also get the chance to thank them for a gift ( if any )
eta. That is basically saying that the gift means more to the person then the fact that they showed up to share in a special life celebration with you.. which to me far outweighs any monetary gift they could give.

didn't mean to start "drama" on here. I was just stunned that so many of those girls said they EXPECT wedding gifts and would find it unacceptable to not get one. weddings are not an investment!

Re: Another LIW post
We had a couple of people not give us gifts, but I still sent them a thank you. It was a thank you for them taking the time to come and see me marry the man I love. I don't know anyone's financial situation, I don't know if they gave a gift but it got lost, etc. There's a million possibilities of why someone wouldn't give a gift. So everyone got a thank you because it was about them coming to share with us. And yes, I honestly believe that.

I agree -- I find the outrage for not getting gifts awful. I was in a convo over there once and someone said that if you can't afford a gift then you shouldn't go to a wedding

anticipate gifts is one thing but to expect it from every single guest is another.
