ok, well not going to work because you have a specific fear of snow is one thing
not going to work because snow is annoying is something else
Not going to work because it takes me 6 hours to get there is doable for me
whatever gets you through the day
word up! when your drive everyday is about 70 miles... without traffic being about 45 minutes and WITH traffic being an hour and a half And the above is pretty much a daily/weekly thing When it snows I STAY HOME

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
I complain because I hate driving in it, but if my job is open, I'm there. I haven't ever called out because of the snow. Doesn't mean I wouldn't though now that I have a baby. If it's really bad, why take the chance driving him to the sitter's? My job is pretty good at closing when it's real bad though. We usually end up with at least one snow day a year.

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
I'm so glad you posted this - I'm thinking about making copies for my whiny co-workers. The majority of them take a train in. If the train is running, they should be here. The LIRR has been pretty good with heat in the cars lately. Sitting on a platform when the train doesn't come is no one's cup of tea but if I'm sitting on the train with an extra 20-30 minutes of sleep, why would I complain? People come in to work & say "could you believe the commute?" I'm on the same line as you - you sat on a train? It would be different if they had to drive in with traffic...
I understand that people who have really long commutes (2-1/2hours) not coming in since by the time they make it in, their commute is longer than the work day. I just can't stand the people that complain about it.

Ya but sometimes people have to drive to the station and they blows to. Last year it took me 2 hours to dig my car out. I got to work but 3 hours late!

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
My DH and I ALWAYS go to work when it snows. He drives a good 35 miles to work and he wakes up EARLY (imagine that) to dig out his car, etc... I leave a little early b/c I walk to the train and have to allow for slow walking. We have weather stations- so we sort of know it's coming, no?

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
I reiterate, IMO, complaining is natural
calling out is silly unless:
you can work from home OR you truly have no way to get to a bus or train, or you really cannot drive
if you have a predisposed fear to snow because of some past experience, that is one thing
but if it's a matter of digging or getting up early, or dealing with traffic, IMO, that just goes with the territory and isn't much of an excuse

no question, but i don't believe that it is a viable excuse to call out of work IMO

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
All I know is that these days, schools close even BEFORE one FLAKE falls!
When I was a kid (back in ancient times ) if we got ONE snow day a year , it was like hitting the lottery!! School NEVER closed, buses always ran and/or you just had to walk.
Kids these days, they gots all the breaks
