All I know is that these days, schools close even BEFORE one FLAKE falls!
When I was a kid (back in ancient times ) if we got ONE snow day a year , it was like hitting the lottery!! School NEVER closed, buses always ran and/or you just had to walk.
Kids these days, they gots all the breaks
AGREED!!!!!

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
and it hurts them later on because these are the ones that call out of work at the hint of snow
when i was growing up we never closed
when i was in high school, i went to school down the street from where my dad worked
the school never closed and my dad never stayed home...so if he went in, i went in.
It s*cked but it taught me discipline

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
I'll be one of those guilty calling out or working from home when school is closed - 5 year olds can rarely be depended on to make lunch for their younger sister....for now as long as daycare is open & the railroad is running, I'm in.
But complain about it? Nah...

I have an option: Move to FL
Today it was mid 70's and gorgous. Took the dog on a long walk and then gave him a bath outside

I agree
It's only hot 3 out of 12 months
I hate the cold. A former collegue of mine is now in Kansas and she said it was 4 degrees a few days ago. That is beyond cold, that is just plain old freezing

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
Just wanted to say that nyc public schools hardly EVER close school or have a delay. So not ALL schools close that easily.

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
The whole snow and NYC thing annoys the crap out of me. I went to school in Rochester and 6 inches (like we are supposed to get tomorrow) is an everyday occurance, no one even mentions it! My friends never visit me in the winter since they are stuck with so much snow, but they would seriously die if they saw how its all over the news right now.

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
This was a hysterical Thread Don...
Its funny cause I was talking to Flee during work today and I said to her" So tell me how many, Oh Gd its gonna snow threads have been started in the last hour" ....And I just KNEW you;d come to the rescue with some sense..
Wait ...did I say sense... NOPE...cause I aint driving in the snow. Thankfully although my job always stays open, they have a very lenient policy with snow and your allowed to call in without penalty so looks like I may sleeping in late tommorow

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
Hey its one of the perks teachers have..... Some get bonuses and gifts for xmas, we get snow chain calls saying to stay in bed, there isnt any school. has nothing to do with driving for me! I just LOVE getting that phone call!!!

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
I'm always the nut job who starts to go stir crazy being trapped inside the house when it snows and I strap on snow boots and get walking to a store. So I have no problem going into work.
I just hate the snow. After 1" falls on the ground I get moody. I hate shoveling and I don't like the cold in general.

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
See, I would NEVER even think of not going to work because of the snow. I assume that if my school is open it's because the roads are safe enough to drive on. I drove a Mustang in New England for two winters, so I'm pretty fine with driving in the snow, especially now that I have AWD in my car. Although, I will admit, the thought of driving in the snow scares me more now that I'm preggo.

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
I also want to add, as much as it has not much to do with this, that being a teacher really makes me feel like a kid again when it hits time for snow. It's fun to watch the news and wonder if your school is going to be up there. Granted, if it's not, I still get my arse out the door, but still, it's fun

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
My Turn: I am guilty of loving a day off. Just relaxing on the sofa w/some hot chocolate or finish decorating. I, however, do not call in sick and never would. My boss lives farther than me and my philosophy is "if she got there, so can I". She called my room this afternoon and said "unless you hear otherwise, please get here safely tomorrow". I said to her "I hope to hear your voice in the AM on my home phone" and she agreed. She even hates the commute. Yeah, we B*tch & Moan but we get over it! This BTW is a great thread!

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
although i am guilty of calling in when there is a decent amount of snowfall, i do not do so because i am lazy and want to lay in bed and eat bon bons and watch soaps all day. i do so becuase i do not feel safe driving in these conditions.
my safety is more important to me then my job. i made the mistake of driving to work 2 years ago in a 6" of snow because i am a dedicated employee and as a result, i got into a car accident. ever since that day, i am definetly more cautious when driving in the snow and do not feel one ounce of guilt if i need to call in.

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
I don't care I'll admit it....I like snow days. I like having a day to play hooky so to speak. But if something important is going on and I need to be there, and can get there, I will. But if I can check e-mail and vm at home, then why risk my safety?

Re: The Public Demanded It: The Captain's Snow Vent
I refuse to drive in the snow..even if its a coating. I got hit once..and I was driving safely as possible...sometimes it doesnt matter how well you know how to drive in the snow, its the other people you have to worry about. My safety comes first. If my boss doesnt understand that, then I am sorry. I also have told her before the school year even started that this is the way its going to be...she shouldnt accept it if shes not gonna be ok with it.
