Kitchen Renovation
This is what our kitchen looks like (will be our kitchen in June). The kitchen is not modern at all and very small, it doesn't even have a dishwasher...we're actually thinking of extending it out to a sunroom right off of the kitchen. I love the pics of Teri's new kitchen and would love to do something like that.
We're thinking of going to Home Depot and have them design a kitchen but we have no idea how much it would be for the supplies and installation.
Any ideas?

I don't really know much about this, but I think it depends on many, many factors. I know you had mentioned an extension into another room. I would think that could get costly. As I said, I am unsure. When we move into our house, we basically need to replace the countertop, add backsplash and eventually update the appliances. I understand where you're coming from because we will eventually be trying to price out those things. You also have to include whether or not you will be hiring someone to do the work or doing it yourselves. Good luck!!  It' a very exciting time!

DH and I went to HD a few weeks ago to price out cabinets, granite & corian countertops, new appliances, etc.
we found out is that it will cost MINIMUM $15-$20K. and that's without knocking down any walls.

Please do NOT use Home Depot for your rennovations - they are the WORST!!! I can share my own horrible story with you via FM if you want to hear the gory details, but all I can say is that my kitchen was the same size as yours and it took them over four months..... The end result was cute, but totally not worth the $17k I ended up spending!!! After I hired them, so many others shared their horror stories as well.
I will never use them for anything again.

I actually went thru Expo but it is the same thing as Home Depot. I think that using them for design and for the cabinets is fine but for the actual work i would caution anyone against using them. Just to give a few examples:
1. They came, demolished my kitchen and then didnt show up for about a month.
2. They hung a lot of the cabinets crooked.
3. My personal favorite, they glued the tiles to the wall upside down even though the label clearly read "THIS SIDE UP".
The whole experience was a nightmare. It got to the point that i just started calling Home Depot Expo and asking to talk to everyone's boss until I finally got to the president of Home Depot Expo. You would be surprised how many people are willing to give out their bosses name and number. Needless to say, I dont think she appreciated the daily updates I started leaving her. She got someone on it right away but it still took another few weeks before my kitchen was completed.

awww, thanks for the compliments on my kitchen
The price really depends on a TON of factors....best thing to do is meet with a lot of companies and get a feel for what you want. We educated ourselves that way and it took about 3-4 mths before we really knew what we wanted, what our options were, etc.
Good luck with it - it's exciting!

This is exactly what we did, too. Definitely a better way to go. DO NOT use HD for any installation work - the ****! I had them install a storm door and it's totally not hung correctly. Now I have to try to get them back here.

My FIL is a kitchen designer and I cannot begin to tell you how many customers come to him after they have had horrible experiences with Home Depot Expo (he mostly does very high end kitchens). BTW, their (Home Depot and many at EXpo) cabinets are very poorly made and would warp over time anyway.
You are looking at 30-50K depending upon how much plumbing you want to move, the quality of your cabinets, electrical, countertops, etc. Of course, you could even go higher than that. Cabinets alone can cost 20K depending upon what wood you want, glaze or no glaze, style of door, and number of cabinets.

I quoted her the price I did because of the expansion of the kitchen into the other room. If she plans on expanding the triangle of the stove, fridge, sink then plumbing (including the fridge if she wants an ice maker) and electrical will have to be expanded. Rewiring and expansing plumbing is very $$$$ and may requie subcontractors depending upon who is doing the job. She will also be adding additional cabinetry, maybe moving a door/window that is seen in the picture of the attached room, etc. Depending upon how much she wants to change the original layout and how many more additional cabinets she wants, and what type of materials she wants to work with, it's more likely that the kitchen's total price will be at the higher end. There is more labor involved in the expansion and labor (in this area of the country) is the most costly expense even if she uses cheaper materials.

I was wondering the same thing. My friends just bought Thomasville cabinets from HD and are very happy.

Ikea has quality cabinets and they are rather cheap! The only catch is you have to put the cabinets together yourself (they do this for you and install as well if you want). IMO, worth the time and effort putting the cabinets together and installing. I have a $20,000 - $25000 kitchen for only $5000!
You really cant beat it!

home depot sells cabinets from lower end scale like mills pride to the more expensive kraftmaid and thomasville. home depot doesnt control the quality of the product they sell the cabinet companies do. home depot isnt the only place that sells those types of cabinets. also it isnt always the amount of money you spend on cabinets that make them well made. i mean there are companies like c.e and omega that are considered higher end that also get shipped with problems. even what is considered one of the best cabinet brands wood mode can be sent with problems .

DH and I just placed an order for a new kitchen at HD. The total price is about $2500+ (Mills Pride) for the cabinets (maple), and another $1000 for the granite countertop. We hired a contractor to install everything for $1000.
You don't have to spend $20k!
If you decide to go the route of HD, there are 20% off coupons on ebay, with a max savings of $400.

This pretty much qualifies my statement. Not all of the cabinets sold are sub-par but many of them warp over time... 5 to 10 years whicn IMO is way too short of a duration of time for such an investment of time
My FIL is a kitchen designer. He says a week doesn't go by that he isn't contacted from at least one person who bought cabinets from and had Home Depot install their kitchen... sometimes only a few years after. When he goes to their house to measure, the cabinets are not in good shape (this has varied from job to job, some worse than others) and the "craftsmanship" on the install is sub-par. He has seen cabinets off-level, not secured properly, etc.
He was considering retiring next year but he says the he has so many requests for kitchens (and many of them from Home Depot customers) it would be crazy to.
ETA: I also said cabinets CAN cost 20K depending upon wood, glaze, door style, etc. It also depends upon how many cabinets will be in the space. She is expanding her kitchen to another room, possibly doubling her cabinets. She might have more cabinets than many of you. If you are getting a particle board cabinet with veneer wood... much cheaper. There is a huge price difference between woods, even for the exact same style of cabinet. For example, cherry runs 20% more expensive for the exact same cabinet versus birch. My estimates are for the entire market of cabinets as I wasn't sure what the original poster wanted.

I decided not to go with Home Depot.
Instead, I checked out the stores at College Point in Flushing, Queens. I got a better quality wood, assembled, and delivered in 1 business day for $1900. I saved over $300 as supposed to getting it from HD - which I would have to wait 2-3 weeks and unassembled.
I ended up getting maple plywood..

Doesn't HD just contract out to independant installers for any of their installations? That was the impression I got when we talked to them a few years ago about windows - each store has a list of independents they send you to, so I can see where the quality would be hit or miss and the store doesn't have the investment in seeing it done quick and right because they've just farmed out the job.

I don't want to sound mean but not everyone can afford a $50,000 kitchen. I have gone to HD and have gotten an estimate for everything (which was $9,500 for cabinets, countertops and labor (which I won't use them though)) and will get my contractor to install the cabinets, lighting, tiling and countertops. I do not want HD to do it.
