Can you qualify this statement? HD sells brands that I've seen sold elsewhere too and come highly recommended. What specifically makes their quality poor? I know several people who have purchased their cabinets at HD and are very happy.

Home depot is known in the industry to sometimes get 2nd quality from the manufacturers, hence the very low prices on some of their lines. Other times the cabinets are exactly the same.
This pretty much qualifies my statement. Not all of the cabinets sold are sub-par but many of them warp over time... 5 to 10 years whicn IMO is way too short of a duration of time for such an investment of time
My FIL is a kitchen designer. He says a week doesn't go by that he isn't contacted from at least one person who bought cabinets from and had Home Depot install their kitchen... sometimes only a few years after. When he goes to their house to measure, the cabinets are not in good shape (this has varied from job to job, some worse than others) and the "craftsmanship" on the install is sub-par. He has seen cabinets off-level, not secured properly, etc.
He was considering retiring next year but he says the he has so many requests for kitchens (and many of them from Home Depot customers) it would be crazy to.
ETA: I also said cabinets CAN cost 20K depending upon wood, glaze, door style, etc. It also depends upon how many cabinets will be in the space. She is expanding her kitchen to another room, possibly doubling her cabinets. She might have more cabinets than many of you. If you are getting a particle board cabinet with veneer wood... much cheaper. There is a huge price difference between woods, even for the exact same style of cabinet. For example, cherry runs 20% more expensive for the exact same cabinet versus birch. My estimates are for the entire market of cabinets as I wasn't sure what the original poster wanted.
I don't want to sound mean but not everyone can afford a $50,000 kitchen. I have gone to HD and have gotten an estimate for everything (which was $9,500 for cabinets, countertops and labor (which I won't use them though)) and will get my contractor to install the cabinets, lighting, tiling and countertops. I do not want HD to do it.
I agree w/this. My Dh is in "the business" & we could not afford anything close to 50k after renovating an as is house. We bought stock cabinets (not mills pride-another brand which is SLIGHTLY better)from HD & we spent 5k total including making the room bigger.
We said when we did it we'd rip it out & do our dream kitchen in 3-5 years but its been 2 yrs & frankly we love it everything is in perfect condition.
Of course some people need all the bells & whistles, we are very modest in our lifestyle.
Here's the before & after just to let people see it can be done on a shoestring budget.
But the fact still remains that HD buys bulk & sells the big names for so much less because some of it is imperfect. That is FINE for a lot of people though

I got my kitchen cabinets coming from Consumers. Kraftmaid cabinets.
They are coming the middle of May.

Very nice! My neighbor had her brother do the kitchen and she did it for $5,000. My dh's cousin just did their kitchen, from HD and they spent $25,000. I think that is the average for a "average" size kitchen without a ton of extras.

Money magazine had the average kitchen renovation as $25K last summer...I think its a fair, moderate estimate for an average redo.
That being said, we have done 2 kitchen redos (2 houses) the first was on the small side and was $8K for everything (done completely ourselves) and the 2nd for $15K (with the help of electrician, plumber and drywaller) for everything, including pretty nice appliances, thomasville cabinets, granite and $40/sq foot backsplash tile! (I fell in love)
