What makes a baby overtired?
DS has been crying a lot lately. Not all day but at certain times and after certain meals. He gets into these crying spells where he will cry cry and eventually close his eyes. He feels he's tired and will fight to stay awake and that's why he cries.
Is it cuz he's up a lot all day? Cuz he takes what I call cat naps. An hour here a half hour there.
It drives me nuts when he does it cuz now I think it's finally caught up with him and today he wants to sleep and that makes feedings a pain in the butt!!!
Errrrrrrr!

I think it is a combination of what you said. DS has to take a nap an hour to hour and half after he gets up in the morning because he is tired otherwise he gets soo cranky. I would look for clues and see if he is tired and then try to put him down for nap. DS started to rub his eyes around 7 weeks.

Re: What makes a baby overtired?
One other thing is that babies can only stay awake for about 2 hours until they get tired. I didn't realise that was true until one of my baby momma friends told me, now I notice that even at almost 6 months, Noah is only really good natured and happy for about 2 hours...then he gets cranky and yappy and has ab-dabs.
Cat naps are okay, if your baby sleeps for an hour, thats great, 30 minutes is fine also! I notice that mine can have sort of 15-20 minute power naps and he is perked up again.
Like the bloody energizer bunny.

Ok so what happens if they happen to fall asleep before a feeding and they haven't woken up yet? Do you waken them, according to the doctor you should wake them up for feedings during the day.

I didn't wake gianna for feedings in the 1st month, she would make up for it later if she was hungry. Gianna would go 3-4 hours sometimes during the day and she is BF.
My Ped told me that after 1 month old if the baby is thriving (growing, gaining) there is no reason to wake them up for a feeding.
I kinda let gianna make the rules with feeding, and she is doing well has been sleeping through the night (from 11 to 5-6am sometimes longer) since 5-6 weeks old.
