What makes someone a fan of a team?

I ask this cuz DH and his Oldest brother had an argument about this on Saturday when we were at my BIL’s house for his older son’s birthday and confirmation party. It all started while all the men were watching the NFL draft, when one of the guys that was there says to my husband (joking around) “I don’t get you guys, you are from NY and like out of state teams, you are a Steelers fan, your other brother is a Cowboys fan and your sister is a Broncos fan and her husband is a Dophins fan”. It was all harmless joking around and DH explained why he became a steelers fan because when he was a young boy in the 70’s he liked the team’s colors and they were a great team who won 4 superbowls in that decade. So DH’s brother says “yeah in other words you are a band wagoner” but he said it in a not so joking way. When it comes to football DH and his brother don’t agree much since they had an argument during the steelers/jets playoff game two years ago. My BIL is a Jets fan. He acts like a big baby. When the steelers made the play offs last year and then the superbowl he never wished DH good luck for his brother’s team. Instead he said “your team has two chances two win, slim to none” …and believe me DH threw that comment back in his face when the Steelers won the superbowl. BIL is a such a sore looser!!!

So anyways he kept accusing DH of being a bandwagoner. Yes ok he does have a point that technically that someone who likes a team cuz they are winning championships is jumping on a bandwagon. But let’s be realistic DH was a kid when he started liking the Steelers and honestly do you think a kid is going to be a fan of a team that *****? But DH has stuck with the Steelers. I think a bandwagoner is more of someone that switches from one team to another constantly. I jumped in and said “what’s the big deal anyway why you are a fan of a team, I have a client at work that was born, raised, and lives in Boston but is a Yankee fan, so what”…My BIL goes “yeah that’s a bandwagoner”. I was like “so what we were kids when we became fans but the main things is we have stuck with our teams, I jumped on the bandwagon when the Mets won the world series in 86 and have been a fan since, even in the bad times” My BIL became a Jets fan when he was 5 and when he said that DH was like “yeah and why did you become a fan, because of Joe Namath so there you go you are a bandwagoner” But the point is in order to be a fan of a team you need to have a reason why you like them!!!!!!!!!! IDIOT!!!!!!!! We all think he’s going through a midlife crisis and is just plain grouchy. He started calling DH stupid, dumb, ridiculous, and that he didn’t know what he was talking about. DH is the only one that answers back to him and he was like “Yeah I’m stupid cuz I don’t agree with an Idiot”…

Sorry for the TMI…I had to vent…

First of all it's a game. I am a big Yankees fan. I support the team in my way. I watch the games, I buy tickets to the games, I buy stuff at the store. I have a flag up on my property...etc..

They haven't won a championship in years, but I still root for them.

I'm a baseball fan first though. I enjoy the game itself.

Being a fan is having an appreciation for something and supporting it.

Re: What makes someone a fan of a team?

DH got so mad at his brother that at one point he was like "what bothers you more? that I am not a Jets fan or that that the Steelers, not the Jets, won the superbowl"...

Re: What makes someone a fan of a team?

you know how i feel about bandwagoners

in this case, i don't see your DH as one, cuz he's stuck with them from childhood

i mean, when we're kids, we all have dumb reasons for our allegiances. In my case, it was because my dad rooted for the Mets and the Jets. They were all I knew.

it's these people that can make informed decisions that jump out and support a winning team all of a sudden, that irritates me.

Absolutely I agree.

I told BIL that you can't just pick a name out of a hat and become a fan of that team. You pick them for the reason that you like and you stick with them. I can undersand if through the years DH kept changing teams yeah ok that's more of a bandwagoner.

But in the end it's noone's business. I am a Mets fan. Have been since I was 12. I too go to their games, buy tickets, buy their merchandise and have liked them through the bad years and lord knows we have had so many of those. It's not easy being a Mets fan, but I have stuck with them.

My brother was a Yankees fan all his life and surprisingly that did not sway me because he never really pushed it upon me. I took it upon myself to be a mets fan.

I like what you said about your dad rooting for the Mets and the Jets and that it was all you knew cuz we are planning on doing that with our son. We are going to teach him to root for the Mets and the Steelers, and that is our business. But if one day when our son is old enough to choose a team to like and decides to be a fan of a another team then I'll have to live with it, as long as he sticks with them for life.

Re: What makes someone a fan of a team?

DH's dad has been a Jets fan and only one of his sons followed in his footsteps. Don't get me wrong DH and his dad have disagreements about the Jets/Yankees and Mets/Steelers but it never gets out of control. When the Steelers and Jets were in the playoffs they wished each other good luck and didn't even have a problem watching it together but DH's brother didn't even want to watch it together. He even tells DH "Rob I would wish your team good luck but I wouldn't mean it". DH just looked at him and said "Grow up"
