What part of the CDL test didn't you understand?
The part about "no trucks on parkways," "no commercial vehicles on parkways" or "your truck won't farking fit through the overpass dummy!"
On a side note, I took the LIE last night instead of the Northern State because of this moron. I think I could have walked home faster.

Many other states don't have restrictions like this. Maybe he was OOS?

It's a NY license plate.

In the world of commercial trucking, that doesn't mean much. It means the truck (which likely belongs to the truckng company, not the driver) is registered in NY. It doesn't mean the driver is from NY or holds a NY license.
Still, there are signs everywhere about the parkways... so I am always consistently amazed at how often this happens.

There was an episode of King of Queens when Danny Heffernan drove his IPS truck into the overpass twice!
If the truck driver drives his truck on NY roadways he should KNOW what he is doing!

ITA. And there is TONS of signage around the parkways. Still, this happens way too often. It amazes me.

And they always go to the right..at least aim for the middle where the arch is higher!! Might have a fighting chance that way!

I could see how it could happen to a native NYer...there are many times that I go on autopilot when i get in the car and I find myself automatically going to work.
Plus, I hit a Denny's sign when we were driving a U-Haul cross country - the cab is much lower than the top of the trailor and while the cab (and you) can get through, the back cannot.

Re: What part of the CDL test didn't you understand?
I was just talking about this with DDs therapist! My DH calls me last night (he should have been home already) and says "Im on the NSP and not moving...darn tractor trailer"!
How do the drivers NOT see the signs "No Commercial Vehicles"! If they see a bridge, WHY do they think "Aahh heck, I'll give it a try anway"..Seriously..Common Sense moron!

"But the GPS SAID to go this way!"....
Actually, there are some GPSs that are designed for rigs. They avoid all the roads that commercial vehicles aren't allowed on.

It's also an optional upgrade on many GPS units.

You don't rent a U-Haul every day, but truck drivers and those of us with commercial vehicles drive them regularly. We all know how wide, high, and heavy our rigs are.
I have a truck with commercial plates, in addition to my cars, and I pull a trailer with it. I'm never on autopilot when driving my truck or pulling my trailer. I am always away of how wide, high, and heavy my rig is. I'm also aware of where I am and am not allowed. While I'm sure it's easy for a pro truck driver to get lulled into a routine, his routine never involves parkways and he should ALWAYS know how high his rig is. Period. Anything else is just dangerous and the driver not paying attention.
I know it's a PITA to drive routes around the parkways -- but I think wrecking your truck, causing tens of thousands of dollars worth of damages, racking up huge fines, and losing your job are probably worse.
I CAN understand a driver not familiar with this area to get confused or turned around and accidentally wind up on a parkway. I can't understand them ignoring the signs indicating the height of the overpass.

Re: What part of the CDL test didn't you understand?
I had the pleasure of driving past him yesterday on the way home from work yesterday. I think on his door it said he was from PA, but I not sure. These guys get some huge butt fines for going on parkways.....it's sucks for them as much as it does for us.......still the guy was a dumb bunny.
why can't these trucks that hit the overpasses ever be filled with money?????

Re: What part of the CDL test didn't you understand?
I don't care where they're from, an observant and responsible driver wouldn't have done this.
I too *almost* hit an overpass when I was driving a U-Haul from Long Beach to East Meadow. I didn't have the foresight to check which roadways allowed commercial vehicles but thankfully, I read the sign listing the height clearance at the first bridge and got off before I tried my luck.
Lesson learned.

I totally get that a driver can get confused and get on by accident. I've seen it plenty of times. But don't keep going. Call the authorities to close the road so you can reverse off of it!

I think you just gave the reasons that prove it is usually an accident. I don't think drivers are trying to get somewhere faster by going on the parkways...I think they are all pretty aware of the consequences.

I don't think they are using the parkways on purpose at all. No trucker wants fines. I think they aren't paying attention, which is fairly inexcusable when driving a big rig.

Re: What part of the CDL test didn't you understand?
Im sorry but there REALLY is no excuse for this. REGARDLESS of the plates. I know few states have these restrictions and that is precisely why it should be easy to remember.
It is INCREDIBLY dangerous and I cannot tell you how many times I have seen this. I have posted about this happening on the JRP before and the only conclusion I could draw from this, and I may get flamed for it, is that it is entirely possible that the driver does NOT speak English and perhaps doesn't understand what "commercial vehicle" means.
People who do this put SO many people at risk - the drivers next to them, behind them and not to mention the possible drivers and pedestrians ABOVE them on the over passes.
There has to be a level of accountability on the part of the driver, owner of the vehicle and perhaps a dispatcher (if used).

I was hesitant to say so, but this was my first thought. It's not an excuse, but I could understand it a bit more if that was the case.

They would have to be able to read and understand commercial vehicle signs (yes, the ones we have, in English, regardless of the language the exam is in) in order to pass the exam for their CDL. It's neither excusable nor understandable.
While other states don't have the same parkway regulations, all states have roads that don't allow commercial vehicles and use those signs. All states have low bridges and overpasses somewhere that list the height.
