Re: what temp is considered a fever in a 2 month old?
according to the What to Expect book it says a fever is considered
for a baby of 2 months or older as 105 F rectally
if the baby is under 2 months it is 100.2 F rectally

Re: what temp is considered a fever in a 2 month old?
I was told to call if DD has a temp above 100.4. They do not medicate for anything below that.

Re: what temp is considered a fever in a 2 month old?
100.4 only go by a rectal reading in a baby this small
Fever in a Newborn Adults have a tightly controlled thermostat to help regulate their body temperature. When cold, an adult shivers, helping to raise the temperature of the body. Sweating occurs when an adult is overheated, to allow for cooling. These mechanisms, on the other hand, are not completely developed in newborns. In addition, newborns lack the insulating fat layer that older babies and children develop.
Because a newborn's temperature regulation system is immature, fever may or may not occur with infection or illness. However, fever in babies can be due to other causes which may be even more serious. Call your baby's physician immediately if your baby younger than 3 months old has a rectal temperature of 100.4° F or higher.

Re: what temp is considered a fever in a 2 month old?
100.4 is the fever that my doctor is concerned with. Today my DS had 99.6 and the doctor said to just watch his temperature for now. So, it is still fever below but it's not dangerous.

Re: what temp is considered a fever in a 2 month old?
100.0-101.0 give tylenol 101.1 and higher take in to the doctor if tylenol doesn't help with in a few hours. At a young age children are prone to febrile seizures. ANY TIME the fever is greater then 103.0 GO TO THE ER! Seizure risks are MUCH greater, and a rectal temp is a "true" temp. If rectal is high other it's high. DO NOT trust the ear therms.

Same here. He used to tell me to call him if she ever had a rectal temp of 100.4 under 3 months old. He always wanted to see her when she did.

Re: what temp is considered a fever in a 2 month old?
100.4 rectal is considered a fever.
Children under 2 months with a fever should be admitted to the hospital for blood/urine tests and spinal tap, and not medicated with tylenol at home unless instructed by a doctor.
No motrin for children under 6 months, some docs say 1 year.
Children older than 2 can be medicated at home for a fever, and they don't necessarily need to come to the ER for temp of 103. There is no "magic" number when it comes to seizures, some kids seize at 101 and others not until 106 or at all. I have seen plenty of kids with 105 and higher who did not seize. They should be medicated right away if possible, and measures should be taken to cool them down. Kids who have seized in the past are at higher risk than those who havent and can seize at a lower temp. If you think your child appears very ill, is seizing, or the ped tells you to go the the ER than that is a different story.
If in doubt, call the ped and do what they recommend. Sometimes they will say to come in, other times they will just say to medicate and go to the office in the morning.

In a 2 month old or younger, 100.4 or higher requires a trip to the ER for the above tests plus a minimum of 48 hours IV antibiotics until the cultures come back, if any are positive then its 10 days. Between normal (99.6 rectally) and 100.4 you can give tylenol at home. At 2 months, if the temp is anywhere over 100, I'd give the doc a call anyway for instructions.
