My dream house is a colonial.

We bought a split because the area we were looking in does not have a lot of colonials. I like our split. The bedrooms are all together on one floor and the playrrom is on it own floor.

DW and I are pretty much in agreement with home styles. We both love a Victorian exterior, but traditional Victorians have a very bad interior layout. We have a Colonial now (mostly my own design after reno), because it's so practical. We'd love to have a Victorian exterior ("tower", wrap-around porch, gingerbread, etc), but more of an open, Colonial-style interior.

I grew up in and have a colonial now. It's really all I know. I would love a contemporary house or a spanish style.

From your choices I'd say a colonial or cape. I grew up in a colonial and have a very strong preference for having the kitchen/dining room/living room/den on the first floor, bedrooms 2nd floor. Our house is a Dutch colonial.

My ultimate favorite is the craftsman style. When we first started house hunting (and before I got a big dose of reality) I swore I would only buy a craftsman style home. Apparently there are very few of these on LI so that quickly went out the window. If we ever build a home down the road it will be a craftsman though.

We have a very old colonial with a wrap-around porch. It is exactly the style of house we love and wanted when we were searching but now that we have a LO I wish that it was more open plan. We have what is known as a railroad colonial where the rooms run one after the other and are pretty closed off. I now realize that we only use or formal dining room a couple of times a year so we plan on blowing out the kitchen, dining room and mudroom into one big greatroom before E goes to school. That way she can do her homework and play while we can keep an eye on her.

My sister had a ranch when her kids were small and I can definitely see the advantage to that style of house. She also had a basement which we don't have and I would love that space for a playroom.

We have a raised ranch, and it is far from my visual favorite, but it is so functional!

I grew up in (and ended up buying) a Cape. I love the coziness.

My forever home I'd love to be a Craftsman or Victorian.

I grew up in a Splanch (Split Ranch) and now live in a 2-story Townhouse. I prefer to buy a Colonial or something with an open floor plan.
I don't prefer ranches, but in the area we are looking to move, it seems that 90% of them are ranches and that's the only thing in our price range. Chat Icon

love colonials but husband felt like it would be to much house for us (we have 2 kids). Our second choice was a high ranch/bilevel which we just closed on last month. I am really happy with the layout. It has alot of room: 3 bedrooms at the top and then a full family room and 2 bedrooms downstairs, we made one a play room and one is a guest room. So you can be watching TV or doing laundry and be able to keep an eye on the kids in the playroom.

love a sprawling ranch. we have a tiny ranch now, and i would prefer the sleeping quarters to be further from the common areas.

love huge splits too because the sleeping areas are away from the rest of the house.

victorians are so beautiful and charming too, but i 'm not into the layouts of most, and the plaster factor [in most] bothers me.
