Definitely The Help and The Red Tent. There are probably more I'm not remembering but then they couldn't have been too great if I can't recall them.

Hmm, probably The Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway -- challenging and weird and brilliant
also, in almost complete contrast The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
