What's up with the trees on Jericho Tpke in Roslyn?

So I was driving on Jericho Tpke in Roslyn/Mineola and noticed all the trees were cut down to the trunks with some remnants of branches left. They looked very out of place and I wondered why they were butchered like that. ???

At first I thought it was because of the power lines, but some trees were cut like that and there wasn't a powerline on that side of the street at all! I don't live in the area so have no idea how long they've been like that.

Does anyone know? Also, will they be cutting the rest of the tree down so they don't look so "scary"?

I think it has to do with the storm that happened a couple of weeks ago.

It was ALL the trees though, not just some. I thought that too.

It is because of the wires. They cut them like that every or every few years. They look ridiculous now. However, new smaller branches sprout quickly and the new leaves round out the tree and completely hide how horrible they look now.
