I think its just a matter of population. There are going to be more women delivering here than in less populated areas. I know in LIJ it is not unheard of to have six people in the room.

.

I don't think it's a matter of more populated areas vs less populated areas. Where I delivered DD and were I'm delivering this baby is not in a less populated area at all, and the entire maternity ward is private rooms.

In fact, many if not most of the hospitals here in my area have all private rooms for maternity. (I'm in NJ)

i thinks its more a matter of age of the maternity ward. newly renovated wards have private rooms. the old school way was sharing - now hospitals are moving toward private rooms.

I can't believe these prices!!!! $700 A NIGHT!?!?! How can they, with good conscience, charge women so much money!?!

because its not a necessity, its a luxury. its an awesome luxury, dont get me wrong - but its not like they are depriving anyone of anything KWIM?

Maybe I will change my mind after I give birth but it doesn't bother me. yes, it stinks but what can you do? its like labor, that stinks too LOL

Its not a necessity...but just think about germs..you have no idea who your roomate could be, or who is visiting them...then you have to deal with all of that. I certainly am not paying those heafty prices and will deal, but I do worry about who I will be sharing a room with...what if they have a huge family? at north shore manhasset I hear visiting hours go till 11 at night!

Not to freak you ladies out delivering at North Shore Manhasset, I am too, but when we went for our lamaze, the nurse said they bumped them up and she was under the impression they were $1k a night...SHOOT ME NOW!!! I'm hoping this is the JLO suite, which come on girls, we can do this! LOL Yeah right! Who in their right minds would fork over 1k a night when they just had a newborn baby that requires so much!!!! AH, I'm so scared that I'm gonig to wind up in a room with like 3 or 4 people! If I find out that their are rooms for between 500 and 600, we might do it, other than that, NO WAY!

Is this why so many people talk about packing flip-flops for the shower in their bag? I always thought...it's a hospital, shouldn't it be clean? I guess it makes sense if you're sharing a bathroom with 3 other people.

I cannot believe how expensive some of the rooms are. I thought 200 a night was bad enough at St. Charles.

At my hospital its $300 a night and I got one last time and will be getting one again. Especially after having a c-section I couldn't imagine sharing a room and bathroom with someone so it was completely worth it to us!

In Manhattan where I delivered - it was over $700 per night, but you did get free parking! LOL!

Same for me. I am delivering at Ny Presbyterian and it's like $700. I heard it tough to even get a private room and there can be wait lists.

that's where I delivered and we paid for the private room. Worth every. single. penny!

I have a question about the bathroom for those who have BTDT..........

Is it a bathroom with more than one toilet/shower? Or is it a regular bathroom (1 toilet/shower) that you have to share with whoever is in your room?

I remember that I took forever when I went to the bathroom for a shower or to do whatever. Not to mention (TMI) there would be blood dripping on the floor andddd (BARFFF) I can't imagine someone having to go in there to use it after me. LOL

i was in both types of rooms and the bathrooms were the same - like a regular bathroom in a home but with a stand up shower, no tub Chat Icon

toilet, sink, vanity, stand up shower (oh, and a nurse call button Chat Icon )

I don't think its that big of a deal to have a roomate..your hospital stay goes so fast anyway. The nurses will clean the bathroom if there is any mess in there. The only thing that bothered me was the visitor thing with the baby in the room. They should enforce the rules of how many people can be in the room or have the baby in the nursery during visiting hours and this mostly applied to my own visitors not my roomates!

i delivered at winthrop and paid $220 per night for a private room.

i had a roomate the first night and then moved to a private room once it was available. That $220 was the best money I ever spent Chat Icon It is a shame that not all hospitals offer private rooms for all.

Some hospitals do offer private rooms standard. Just depends on the hospital Chat Icon

Crashing... I delivered at Winthrop also and I totally agree, it was the best $ ever spent. I had a regular room the first night w/out a roomate ( I got lucky) the next morning I they moved someone in and it was a nightmare. Her husband & family were using our bathroom and taking over the whole room. I moved to a private room an hour later.

Re: What's with paying to have a private room??

BEFORE I gave birth, I thought it was nuts to pay for a private room. Next time, I def will....no matter what the cost.

One of my roommates was BF'ing and kept the baby in the room all night. The baby screamed and screamed all night long. Another roommate had her oither kids visiting constantly----they were running all over the room. Another roommate puked her freaking brains out for nearly 8 hours. Every time I wanted to go to the bathroom, I always had to wait bc someone was in there. It's so annoying when u r bleeding and really just need to change your pad but have to wait. Ugh. How about having to look at other people's dirty pads every time u throw something in the garbage? Sooo gross.

It's one thing to get no sleep there bc the nurses have to check YOU and your BABY but it's another thing when u have to deal w/ constant noise and interuptions bc of others and deal w/ their gross, rude behavior.

Hey, that's just my opinion...but it's something to think about!

Due to a circumstance with DH (which he will NEVER live down) I was given a private room at GS. I cannot imagine not having a private room and bathroom after a c/s. Someone I knew was down the hall with a roomate. The rooms are tiny as it is let alone sharing it. they also let the baby stay with you if you're BFing so on top of the visitors and the babies and the BFing and the sharing of the bathroom....our next Chat Icon will be delivered at St. Brook!

Re: What's with paying to have a private room??

I'm from OOS and visited many family and friends back home in their private rooms, many of them L&D suites, where they never had to leave the room. So when I found out most hospitals here charge an arm and leg for private rooms, I about peed myself.

Being the frugal person I am, I didn't opt for the private room at LIJ. I shared a room with three other women. When one checked out, another checked right in an hour later so there wasn't really a moment's peace.

I didn't shower at all there. I was too grossed out. I tried to time it right after the janitor left the bathroom but I was sidetracked by a nurse coming in and someone else jumped in. Uh no thanks. I had the best shower of my life when I got home to my clean bathroom.

This time, I'm delivering at Stony Brook so no problem there.

I didn't deliver at Manhasset, but I did at another NSUH hospital and I would be SHOCKED if visiting hours go to 11pm for the general public!!! Maybe for husbands, but I couldn't see any old person walking in at that time of night

The fees these hospitals are charging are ridiculous, although I totally understanding wanting a private room. I delivered at Huntington and had a roommate. It wasn't complete torture, but my roommie snored loudly and wasn't BF'ing like me (and one particular member of her family who visited all the time made it apparent that they did not approve or want to see BF'ing Chat Icon), so it was difficult and very uncomfortable. I barely slept at all the whole time there and I was recovering from a c-section. This is part of why I'm thinking of going to SB next time.

Luckily, I'm delivering at one of the hospitals here in DC that does have private rooms (Georgetown). But I know my friends who have been at some of the others that did not regret not being someplace that had them.

So sorry that some of you are forced to pay for the "privilege" of privacy and rest! Chat Icon
