i heard that those ancestry kits are run by mormons or something. if youre jewish, they baptize your last name
What? I need to read up on that because I was going to get one.
I just read that the Mormons were baptizing the dead, even Holocaust victims.
However lets say they baptized your name, what difference does it make. They can't force you into a club you don't want to be in.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/03/us/jews-take-issue-with-posthumous-mormon-baptisms-beliefs.html
This is absolutely disgusting.
They were doing this but I thought they had stopped after complaints were made

Re: What's your heritage?
50% cuban
50% dominican
but that translates to: spanish, french, african... possibly in that order.
one of the things on my 2017 bucket list is to do a dna test to get confirmation of all of that.

Re: What's your heritage?
This is so funny.
We were just talking about this in our office. A lot of people here know I spent so much time in New York and we were talking about the differences. Of course I miss the food so much and no the people there aren't what they think or see on TV. I respect and love NY. Miss it a lot actually.
But the funny thing is only up there do people ask this question and get this answer.
Here its more like OH ya know Tyler, TX, Dallas, or maybe 'from California or New York'. No one ever really wants to know that you're Mexican, Italian or Irish. We just assume you're American.
I remember that I went round and round with someone at my office because I didn't understand the question.
So where are your people from?
Texas
No. I mean your parents. You know your family, where are they from
Texas
Your grand parents
Texas
Your ancestors
Texas
No like all the way back.. where are your PEOPLE FROM like Mexico, Spain ya know, where are you FROM, what's your heritage?
I'm American by birth, as is my father and my mother. Therefore we are Americans. Texans if you must know.
My mother's mother came to Mexico via Spain to escape Nazi prosecution of Jews, then migrated to America, where she gave birth to my mother.
My father's mother came off an Indian reservation with no formal education of any type and was told it was easier to say you are Mexican than Indian.
My husband came to this country when he was 3 from China. But he was born in British occupied Hong Kong.
But none of that really matters does it? Other than my husband technically being British. We are Americans.
My daughter will grow up always saying one thing. She is an American. New Yorker if you ask her more. Her mother is a Texan and her father is Chinese. But she herself...
She's American by heritage.
So much of my family fought so hard to be American. Not hyphenated. Just American. The right and privilege to be American. My grandmother was humble and too meek to even admit she existed in public much less to ever say she was an American because she never thought she was.
What's my Heritage? American. That's it.

and i think this is the BEAUTY of america and being american... hyphenated or not.
we come from all over the place, we have the right to mate/marry anyone from anywhere else, and we make beautiful babies... and then... all of us can identify how we feel is right for US as an individual.
when i was little... i mean like 3... my dad used to tell me that i was a cuban refugee. my great uncle on my mom's side would offer me money to say i was dominican. i always refused and said i was a cuban refugee... i was born in queens lol.

I think there is a big difference between the question of what's your nationality and what's your heritage. It isn't like the OP said what are you? She asked about the heritage.

Exactly the same. When I asked my mom about it once bc we always just say Jewish she says it's Eastern European. She said we were kicked out of every country. LOL Some of my great grandparents were born in the US. All my grandparents were born here.

Yep. Thanks, Klingklang. That is actually the exact reason why I chose "heritage" and not "nationality."

We agree! Unless you are 100% native American, your heritage is NOT American! OP didn't ask about Nationality.

It's so funny bc my dad is from Italy. Always thought he was 100% Italian. And then, his Grandma was adopted. Never knew where she came from. Turns out, Saudi Arabia! He did the DNA test and while the bulk of him is greek and italian- a quarter of him his Saudi Arabian. I feel like most Italians born in Italy won't be true Italians.

100% Italian both me and my parents were born in Italy, I moved here when I was 5. My kids are first generation Italian-American.
ETA: I would love to do the DNA test. I'm sure there is other heritages in us that we don't know about.
