What's your opinion on really popular baby names?
We have chosen the name Madison for our little girl. It is the #2 most popular girls name right now, but we have always loved it...way before it became popular.
My Mom keeps giving me a hard time about how popular it is. She said everyone she mentions it to says, "well, I love the name but I know 5 Madisons right now...it is SO popular". Why would anyone even say that to my Mom in the first place? So rude.
Anyway...my question is...if you and your DH REALLY love a name but it is extremely popular, do you stick with the name because you love it, or do you change it because you hate the idea of everyone in his/her class having the name?

We will not go with Gianna for this reason. I always loved this name, but it is so popular now that it kind of lost its shine for us. I do feel that if it is the name that you love, then do not let its popularity stop you.
(PS we have 3 friends who in the past 4 years have daughters named Gianna).

USE IT!
I wanted Emily for a girl and I think it is either right in front of or right behind Madison, and I would have used it too.
You love it and it doesn't matter how many little girls have it, she is YOUR Madison.

I love the name Isabella for a girl have loved it for years.. long before it became SOOO popular. I debate all the time if I were to have a girl if I would use it.
DH and I both love then name but part of me isn't sure b/c of how popular it is and how often you hear it.

i would use it. when i was born Jennifer was so popular and now i feel like Jennifer barely exists. If you and DH love a name, that's all that matters.

I was going to use your name as an example but didn't want to offend anyone
I know a million Jennifers and many have told me growing up they hated their name and how everyone seemed to have it. Once you get older I don't think it's that bad but in school... I don't want there to be 5 girls in the class with my daughters name. This is why I am torn

Re: What's your opinion on really popular baby names?
We are naming our baby Emma and I believe that was the number one name for 2006. We both knew that would be her name before we even knew she was a girl, and never even thought about another name. We are so in love with it, and it doesn't matter to us how popular it is.

Re: What's your opinion on really popular baby names?
We crossed a few names off our list b/c the names were very popular and our friends have named their children the sames names, so, we still went with a popular name, Taylor, but not as popular as the ones we crossed off

Use whatever you like. Your Madison will be unique regardless if there's 5 others in her class. All the names we ever liked has been in the top 10 for years now.

Re: What's your opinion on really popular baby names?
My daughter's name is/was rather popular...it didn't stop me. So far, she's been the only one in her classes [preschool and Kindergarten] to have the name!
I did have issues with a boy name DH had picked out because it started to feel like literally everyone was using it. [I personally knew 3 people who had sons named this name] DH decided on his own he didn't like it anymore [mainly for the popularity] and so we are back to finding a new name for our baby in the event we have a boy.

We preferred to go with names that were slightly not popular, but not radically unique

Re: What's your opinion on really popular baby names?
I personally wouldn't use a super popular name. We love the name Jacob for a boy but since it is like #2 on the list, we aren't going with it. I don't want my son to be forever known as "Jacob B."

Re: What's your opinion on really popular baby names?
Honestly, If its popular..I dont care. As long as it isnt popular amongst the people I know or family...meaning if someone else has the name.
I actually am going with a popular name that was mentioned and I like it, so does DH and everyone that we presented it to. It fits her and are happy with that decision.
If you love it, go for it.

They're popular but that's ok. I really don't think its reason not to use it if you love the name.

DH and I love Old Testament Bible names. Until and unless the Old Testament goes out of style, people will have to deal with it. Many of the names we toss around are popular.

Re: What's your opinion on really popular baby names?
Most of the names I like are popular - my fave Emma is right up there with Madison. But I've loved the name for YEARS...even before Rachel named her baby that on Friends. Plus, it was my great grandmother's name.

Re: What's your opinion on really popular baby names?
I was always kind of against really popular names. I like regular names but not "top 10" type names. That was with my older 2 kids. With my DS #2, we loved the name Matthew and even though I know its very popular, because I love it that much, it doesnt bother me like I originally thought it would if I ever used a popular name. We couldnt think of a name we liked as much or more. I dont regret it at all.

Re: What's your opinion on really popular baby names?
I personally do not like names that are very popular-- and I have had to take names off our "list" because of it-- but that's just my personal preference-- I like to be original.

Re: What's your opinion on really popular baby names?
I would give the ix-nay to a really popular name, but I think even if you named your child Poppycock Nasturtium you would take that newborn baby to the mall and you would hear a lady talking to her toddler saying "POPPYCOCK NASTURTIUM GET OVER HERE" it never fails!!!
In England Noah is a completely unpopular name, one lady in the supermarket asked me if I made it up! But today when my husband took Noah to nursery, he told me that there was another Noah starting there today! So its Murphys Law!!!

Re: What's your opinion on really popular baby names?
For many many years my favorite girl names have been Emma, Isabella and Ava. However, because they are all in the top 10 now I won't use them. I don't want my child to be the 5th or 6th kid in her class with the same name. Ideally, I would like a name that is known but not too common-maybe top 100?
That said, I have looked at tons of baby name books and can't find any girl names I like as much as my original choices. Maybe we'll have a boy. There are tons of boy names that we like which are not too common.
Ultimately, I think you should use a name you and DH are comfortable with.
