I understand what you are saying, but the fact that the wife came out of the store and just kept the money is what bothered me. I really hope that is the reason she returned everything, but she did say she wanted clothes for her kids- which is exactly what I did. And as for the toys, it was a total of 5 books and some blocks because they were just sitting there looking miserable without anything to do. I can only hope she did the right thing and purchased food for her family, but from the vibe I got when I handed her the bags, I have a feeling that went straight in their pockets for something else.

I feel terrible for you. You tried to do a nice thing and honestly, I do feel you got taken for a ride with that one. Did you ever consider asking the woman why she returned all that?

What's your take on this?

I just had this happen to me last week at the Target in Riverhead, hispanic guy driving a really nice Corolla stopped me on my way to my car and asked me if I had $20 to loan him to get diapers and formula for his baby , he had his wallet out to show me a pic, he said his credit card was declined. He was really pissed when I said no.

I will never give anyone who is begging for money ever again- ONLY to the salvation army during the holidays.

I saw a family with 2 young boys sitting on the side of the target in Commack a few years ago. They stopped me asking for change because they needed to buy clothes and food for their kids. I told them I would give them my change when I came out. Instead, I spent close to $80 on clothes, diapers & pull ups, toys and snacks for the kids. I came out with 2 large bags and gave them to this family. When I got in my car I saw the wife walk in to Target with the bags, and walk out a few minutes later without the bags. I must have left the receipt in the bag, and she had the nerve to return everything and pocket the money!!! That made me SO mad, so I will never do anything like that again! Chat Icon

Maybe they needed food and not clothes and toys?

Yes, shame on her for not taking their order like a waitress and buying exactly what they needed.

I'm just saying, if you were actually out of food and someone went and got you clothes you wouldn't find a way to exchange it for food? Really? Trying to act all OMG they exchanged what I bought them when it's quite possible they were actually hungry is silly.

Beggars can't be choosers. And she did say she bought snacks. And it's not like the woman came out with other food instead. She came out with the cash.

So Target sells enough food now to go food shopping? If you were a beggar and had the choice between clothes and toys or exchanging them for the chance to get food, you'd choose the clothes?

You tried to do the right thing, and that is the only thing that matters. I have seen people return clothing and books at stores like Target and Walmart in order to get food, so that is where my perspective came from.

Re: What's your take on this?

My aunt's priest was saying not to give them money. He said send them to the church. He will never turn anyone away but, that they shouldn't be sitting out with the kids.

ETA: After reading through this I think it might be a gypsy-like issue. Dh is from the south and he said they used to get alerts in the mail all the time when the gypsies were in town with scams.

I saw a family similar to this at the Costco shopping center in Westbury yesterday. I didn't stop, and felt really bad. We just moved out of Manhattan & after all the years living there, people begging still breaks my heart.

I have been researching this all day and have found so many message boards both recent and from last year about this scam.
It seems to be a very large operation of beggars

What's your take on this?

I googled a little... Look at this article, how sad would it be if these families were forced into this...

I just saw them Friday in the Airport Plaza shopping center on 110. Same exact situation. The sign says something about not being able to pay rent or something similar. I also, did not stop.

Yup me too. Airport plaza, Bjs & walmart on 110. As well as target in copaige. I felt really sad the first time & wondered if it was real because they looked... staged, but felt sad either way. By the 4th I felt Chat Icon. I'd feel terrible if I'm making a snap judgement about a family who really is in a bad situation but it felt off to me personally. I did not stop to give them anything.

Re: What's your take on this?

I see a family like this near the Costco in Holdbrook too and today I noticed that his sign was written in English. Unless someone else wrote it for him I'd think that young, healthy and English speaking should be a ticket to some kind of job. I see signs for warehouse and administrative workers at the building about 500 feet down the road from where they are begging and often see them at other local businesses and stores too. May be miniumum wage or barely better but you have to start somewhere.

This is fascinating. Have the gypsies moved over here? I've seen them sparsely in Manhattan but never in Li. Is it possible that those who've seen these people and are describing them as Hispanic but they are actually gypsies?

That is exactly what I am thinking. I have heard some people describe them as spanish but, my Mom said they almost looked Middle Eastern to her. I would bet money they are Gypsies.

Re: What's your take on this?

So yesterday I had to go back to that shopping center at lunch and there was a LINE of traffic to get in the entrance near where they stand. The traffic was backed up onto the highway trying to get in.
Now this NEVER happens over there- even during the holiday rush. Sure enough there was a different guy there with a sign and an empty infant car seat.
The back up was people slowing down to look I guess. I couldn't see any other reason for it.
All i know is it is becoming a hazzard now- I really feel like the police need to be involved.
I mean is it legal to loiter around like that and cause traffic disasters?
And now it's a DIFFERENT guy all of a sudden?
Very very suspect.

Re: What's your take on this?

I was at the bru shopping center in Massapequa with dh last week and there was a family with a baby stroller at the entrance of the center but there was a cop there talking to them and they walked away afterward. I was tempted to run over and give them a 20 but dh said no, that it was probably a scam. He was also on a mission to find the cop because some jerk kids parked in a handicapped spot when there was no signage on the car.

I agree. Even if it's true and they need assistance, the police need to crack down on this before it snowballs.

Maybe we should all start calling the non emergency police number and report these people when we see them? This is child abuse! They have these kids sitting out in the scorching sun and heat, when I saw them it was RAINING and they were sitting there with no shelter. I am so livid and upset for these kids, this is clearly a scam! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Does anyone know the non-emergency police number? I want to put it in my cell for this reason.

Re: What's your take on this?

i was in the tjmaxx/walmart shopping center in islandia this past weekend and saw the same thing - the "no money for food or rent, god bless" sign. I gave him a bag of clean baby items i had in my trunk - i had been meaning to donate them anyway. He had a 18-24m old little boy in a stroller. I've been thinking about it since....
