Someone Fm'd me that it wasn't the same family they saw. I guess it is a scam acoss the island.

Honestly- they look similar but I don't think it's the one's I saw in Commack at Target.
But then again, the other day it was another family...so who knows.

Re: What's your take on this?

Reminds me of a scam I saw on the subway. There was a pregnant woman with a similar sign and begging from car to car. Of course people, including myself, gave to her. I rode the same train every day for 3 years. She would show up pretty regularly. She never got any more pregnant, nor did she ever "give birth," even a year later! Since then I've been leery of scams...

He was at the king Kullen shopping center in Selden yesterday. Mentioned it to my husband who replied,"maybe he should be spending his time applying to the stores in the shopping center". Good point, but I do feel bad

Re: What's your take on this?

See, it's now definite in my mind that this is a huge scam ring.
Because they are apparently all over long island- doing the SAME exact thing.
There is no way that all of these hard luck people suddenly came out of the woodwork all at once- with the same story, the same sign, the same situation.
I wonder if any of the police depts are aware of this and have looked into it?

Different family that I have seen at the Commack Target and Home Depot shopping centers. The man I saw was older and was dressed nicer (pants and long sleeved shirt). I believe the "family" was of Middle Eastern descent. Cardboard sign was brown with writing in black marker.

And if they all have cell phones, it's easier for them to converge on areas and keep in touch.

Sounds like a huge scam to me!

Has anyone seen them in Nassau? The ones I've seen in Manhattan over the years are dressed poorly (like "gypsies").

I saw a woman go over and give money. It took so much not to tell her it's a scam.

A long time ago, I had been out of work and on hard times once, with a baby. You know what I did? I scouted all places for a job. So did DH - looked for a side job. We sold items, did everything we could.

I'm betting they are here illegally, as well.

Never would I stand in a street asking for money. I see real poor people all the time. THey have dirty clothes, a cart filled with stuff, and they don't bother anyone and don't ask for a dime.

these assholes are literally standing there in shade asking for free money. At least offer to wash a ******* car for $3.

I know I sound heartless, but I'm not. I'm fed up. Times are tough for everyone. There are food banks out there.

I saw a man outside BJ's in East Setauket on Friday holding a sign asking for money to pay his rent and for food. He had his daughter (under 2) in the stroller next to him. I did stop and give them money. I have a daughter the same age and it just broke my heart. Chat Icon

I saw that man too and gave him 10 bucks. If he is a scam artist, so be it. I couldn't not give to them.

I don't give $, although its a good thing I hardly ever have cash on me.

It really sucks that people use their kids like this though. I get that times might be tough, but kids should not be subjected to it. Scam or not...

yes, I posted earlier that I saw a man, woman and kid in stroller at the south entrance of the B'way Mall in Hicksville, the road that leads you down to Target. I've seen them on more than one occasion. I'm always driving, so I never even got a real good look to see if its the same people each time!

I was just going to write about this!! Yesterday at the kohls shopping center in Huntington/Melville area where marshalls dicks and walbaums is right on the grass area near marshalls samething a family men holding a sign lady and a baby in a stroller! I did end of giving some money to them. Not sure if they were Indian or Spainish he did have an accent and just kept saying bless your family.

Same family same place a few weeks ago. I gave them $5 and was shaken up rest of the day. Wished I brought their little girls out a toy from Kohls, where we went to buy our same aged girls a toy without batting an eyelash. Felt guilty all day. Now I'm mad.
