When are you going back to the office?

I am surprised there is a push to bring us back - we aren't essential by any means. Although I think I am going to try to get my days reassigned and go in occasionally on Weds and Thurs so I can solely focus on work for a bit.

We just renovated a floor too - and were in the process of starting renovations on other floors. I know of a lot of people who don't want to go back now at all so I would be surprised if we maintain the 4 floors were currently have.

My old company in NYC is greatly reducing office space and encouraging people to work from home as much as possible. They are in NYC though.

My husband's company is home until at least next summer. I don't think they are ever going back. Honestly from a business standpoint, if they can do the work remotely without loss of revenue or production, why go back. They will save tons on real estate costs.

I work with a lot of sales people and this is what they have been saying lately in terms of this whole never needing to back to an office ever again idea...
For them, meeting online is not the same when it comes to selling what they sell. The in person, look you in the eye while presenting, take you out to lunch, or dinner, or a hockey game or a golf outing has served them better in the past in terms of client relationships.
A lot of their client base is based on interpersonal relationships. Anyone can sell you the "widget" or the service but it's the relationship you forge with your clients that keeps them coming back to you as their trusted advisor. It's being able to be there in person when a project kicks off as the sales rep or to walk a candidate in that you just sold them as a consultant that gives you that little bit of competitive edge.
It's also a lot easier to zone out and not pay attention during a video or an audio meeting when someone is presenting than it is to do that when you are face to face in a conference room with them.
This morning I was folding towels on a financial review call because they were sitting there right in front of me and I wasn't speaking. If I had been in the office for that meeting, I'd have been way more engaged want to or not.
So while technology allows almost everyone to do the logistical part of their job from anywhere there are parts, especially when it comes to sales and client facing type roles, where just because you "can" doesn't mean you "should"
That's why I see a return to more in person work when things calm down with the virus even though the vast majority of people can do their job at home.
I feel the companies that go back in person, will have the competitive edge being able to meet clients face to face and all the soft advantages that holds.
That was just the thought of some of the higher ups in my company at our last meeting as well as others in our industry

I agree. Some job positions need to be in person. Sales and Client interface positions being one of them. Many jobs though do not need to be in person and companies are going to save a ton of money leaving them remote. When I was working, 12 years ago lol, the investment bank I worked for already starting having all back office and support staff work from home. We took 2 full buildings off our real estate portfolio and saved a ton.

Agree. Back end support roles can totally be remote.
IT support too for the the most part.

When are you going back to the office?

I went back last week for the first time since March (been working remotely this whole time). . Other employees have been reporting in for 2 days a week since the beginning of July. But now we’re all back to our regular schedule. Honestly, it felt good to be back and see my co-workers again. DH has never stopped working in person since his job is considered essential.

Re: When are you going back to the office?

We will likely be remote through at least the end of the year. I have been attending in person meetings at least 1-3 times per week for the past few months, but that will probably slow down a bit soon. About half of my Company never left the office, but those who don’t need to be in the office have been working remotely. I would love to be back in the office at least a few times per week.

DH is working remotely until further notice. He had the option of going back after Labor Day, but would’ve had to commit to coming in a certain number of days per week. He can get everything done from home and with me attending meetings, it made sense for him to continue working from home.

When are you going back to the office?

My husbands office has permanently closed and he will be working remote. His company closed an east coast and west coast office. They found the working remote was working out fine so to cut overhead they decided they didn’t need the offices.

My company is still closed nationwide. I’m not sure we will ever go back. They recently sent a survey about how working remote is for us so I’m guessing they will be closing or downsizing our offices.

I will need to figure something out as I don’t think it will work for both my DH and I to work from home on a personal level.

Re: When are you going back to the office?

I work for an insurance company (law firm/staff counsel) and while our company has informed all the claims employees to work from home indefintely (some have reopened supposedly in other states as of this week but I dont know specifics) all the offices in NY region are primarily remote until December or so.

However since some judges in Suffolk county are requiring in-person appearances on cases, the attorneys in my firm have had to go into the office to print stuff and appear in court (I was in court for the first time in 6 months just a few days ago). My office is technically open but only 1-5 people are allowed to go in and we must all fill out a COVID19 screening checklist (via a mobile app) before we go into the building.

Our manager has said we will likely be remote for the next few months at least. Since the situation is still fluid, we won't know for sure though.

When are you going back to the office?

My office allowed people in by request starting in April because we were not in any way set up to work remotely. From April to mid-July it was max 4 people in my office at a time, and when I was in (because of where in the building my office is) it was max 3 and only 4 hours once a week. This meant nobody had contact with anyone while in the office. In mid-July it went to 10 people in the office once a week for a full day. That's where we are now, but since the district courts opened last week, there are a bunch of us that now have in person appearances instead of virtual appearances.

JPM and now Goldman want employees back in office. I think their push will begin the mass returns to office.

My business is kind of dependent on people being in offices so I hope so.
We are suffering numbers wise right now.
But that's also a product of the economic slow down overall so it's a combination of things.

For me, personally, I just want to have the option. Not to force anyone in, but be given an option at a reduced capacity.
I don't have that option at all right now. I can't even go in to get some things out of my desk, they have it locked up like Fort Knox.

There was an article on LinkedIn and some of the larger business CEO’s spoke out saying NY needs employees back in the office. Without these employees the rest of the city is suffering.

Yes, that is exactly it. It's a vicious cycle..
I also think of all the commercial real estate/office space in NYC. All those sky scrappers full of offices. What will become of them when the world is working from their couch in their underwear all day? Chat Icon

I think this is true. Then the sales folks want the support staff and back office people back office, face to face. That’s how this is likely to play out . I have several friends who have been WFH for a long time (prior to this) and have just been let go. Huge companies that are having no issues. I don’t get it. My DH wants to go in when he can bc the thinking is out of sight .....

I think a lot of companies that aren't having issues yet may still be doing some proactive layoffs to better weather the storm. My company is still doing ok, but they see the writing on the wall in terms of how light our pipeline is looking the longer this drags out. So we let a few people go... very little, but just to shore up a bit.
And I guess if you have been a remote employee , it's easier to let them go first because as you said- out of sight, out of mind.
If I was forced to pick someone to lay off between the employees who I had seen every day, worked with, went to lunch with, had a face to face interpersonal relationship with and someone who was working from home for me in another state who I never saw and all 3 were equal in terms of their work and skill, I'd probably go with the far away remote one as well...

Re: When are you going back to the office?

I have been back in my office for several months (happily) and have a bit of a different perspective. I COULD work from home but asked to be one of the first ones back - for me, it was very difficult working from home - way too many distractions, I was always eating, in my pajamas, and kept doing chores. Now that I am back I feel like a person again.

At first, everyone working from home worked out well - everything was closed and nobody could leave their home and everyone was worried about getting laid off. So productivity was excellent. However now, it is often brutal to get things done when everyone is in a different place. There is no substitute for walking over to someone's desk and asking them a question. Now, it takes me hours of emails and phone calls just to SCHEDULE an online meeting - which is often filled with technical glitches. Meanwhile, employees are very resistant to returning to the office reportedly because they are terrified of dying of Covid, meanwhile I personally SEE these people on Facebook out at restaurants with their friends.

I just think in the long run, having most employees work from home will not be sustainable.

I have also asked, volunteered, pleaded, said I'd sign a waiver, to be able to go back to an office. Sadly nobody is allowed. Still. 6 months later. To a small office that houses about 15 people on a good day, and now would probably have about 5 lone souls tops. On Long Island with one if the lowest infection rates in the country. Where my daughter is in school all day every day in a class of 17. Where my DH is back at the gym working out amongst others. Where I have sat in indoor restaurants for months.
And still. No plans to allow anyone back. Not even a mention, a whisper, or a thought.
Like you, I can't work from home. My productivity is in the toilet. But more importantly my mental health is suffering. Every day I feel myself slipping more into depression. I actually considered looking for another job where I can at least go to an office on occasion and interact with people.
That's how bad my mind has been lately. 6 months in.

You are right, this is not sustainable.

When are you going back to the office?

Starting 10/5 I need to go in part time. They assigned me a time that doesn't work with my schedule so I need to get some things moved.

There may be someone else in with me but, it would just be 2 of us in our section of floor.

But, they will buy us lunch...

I went in for the first time yesterday for a random meeting. I was super nervous but I found it rather relaxing. There were only a few of us in. I am now contemplating on whether or not I should ask if I can start coming in a day or 2 a week.
