Re: When can I start planting impatients?
I've decided it's never too early!!! In 2004 I planted them about this week in April because I needed to fill the beds in front of our house for when we did pictures for the wedding.
Anyway, they held up really well even thought it was earlier than I would have normally planted.

Re: When can I start planting impatients?
I would think in the next few wks it would be okay. At night now, it may still be a bit too chilly for flowers to last in freezing temps. I don't know how hardy impatiens are though.....last year I planted mine in early May I think.

Re: When can I start planting impatients?
We usually plant them around now. Maybe we'll get to that tomorrow.

Re: When can I start planting impatients?
Many people say that the weekend of Mother Day is the general guideline on when to start planting outside.
Technically, we still could have some low temps at night.

Re: When can I start planting impatients?
I think you can plant pansies now, they are more cold resistant...impatiens are usually the first week of May.

Re: When can I start planting impatients?
Usually it's after the threat of frost. My father has been a landscaper for years and he always used Mother's Day as a guideline. Tulips will also be lost in frost.

Me too, I always wait to plant til Mothers Day. I've had babies freeze their butts off in cold April frosts.
Of course that hasn't stopped me from BUYING yet! I just keep everything in the house or at least under the porch where if the dew falls it won't land on them.

Same here my father was also a landscaper and we never plant before Mother's Day.

Rule of thumb is after Mother's Day for annuals and veggies.

Re: When can I start planting impatients?
You're not supposed to plant until after MOther's Day but I usually plant the end of April.
I planted some tulips today though, but I wont plant impatients for a few more weeks.

Re: When can I start planting impatients?
In zone 6/7, our frost free date is April 15th, I purchased 14 plants for a new "shade garden" online and they ship then when it's appropriate to plant and they've now been in the ground for over a week and are thriving.
My pansies have been in since early March and look fantastic, except for the one plant the squirrels kept digging up.
Impatients are more of a hot weather plant so I'd still wait a few weeks. I usually wait at least until the forsythia is done blooming for impatients. If they are in flats you could put them into jiffy pots to give them a little more room to grow and lessen the shock when they go into the ground.
