When can you stop waking a newborn to feed?
They say you should wake your newborn every 2 to 3 hours to breastfeed. When can you stop waking them and just feed on demand when they wake up on their own?

Re: When can you stop waking a newborn to feed?
After our two week appointment the ped noticed that DD was gaining good weight. She said no need to wake her to feed, but the reality is, it didn't matter she wasn't STTN anyway, so when she woke up I fed her.

My DS is 9 days old. Ped said at last appointment that we can stop waking him once he regains his birth weight. We are going to the doctor tomorrow so hopefully he will be back to his weight!

Our ped told us the same...once he regained his birth weight I didn't have to wake him...I didn't really have to anyway since he was hungry every hour and a half!

Same here! I never really have to wake them...they get up every 3 hours. I do wake them during the day, sometimes, to stay "on schedule", which is just necessary with two!

Same for us too. We FF though since DS wasn't getting enough milk from me and was losing weight instead of gaining. We go back to the ped Friday for a weight check... I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a major weight gain.

I never woke up either of my kids to BF. But both were over 8 lbs when they were born and gained weight like it was their jobs.

Re: When can you stop waking a newborn to feed?
You really shouldn't have to after the first few days as long as they are gaining well. I would ask your ped though, because every dr. advises differently!

I never woke him - If he was hungry, there was no way he was going to sleep through it -

Ditto this. I only did the first couple of nights in the hospital because the nurse made sure he was eating at least every 2 hours. After that he was walking on his own even more often than that to feed.
