Re: When did you first take your newborn out in public?

I take my 7 1/2 week old to family every weekend for the past few weekends. We've taken walks when the temperatures were high. As far as what I consider "public," he's been in two stores very quickly out of necessity, but I had been trying to wait until at least 8 weeks before letting him spend any real time with us in stores or places like that. I can see myself waiting just a bit longer still.

Re: When did you first take your newborn out in public?

Sasha was 7 weeks yesterday... I just went to Target to get some baby supplies and I went into CVS a couple of weeks ago. I really don't want to take her out-- but I figured one or two quick trips where the stores are not crowded and are large and open were ok. I do not make a habit out of taking her out. I do try to get walks in-- but I think she hates being outside.

I prefer to keep her away from people as long as I can... I am actually dreading Passover in a few weeks..

Re: When did you first take your newborn out in public?

A week or so. Of course she went out in public to the first ped. visit when she was a few days old. I think the ped's office is more germ infested than most public places anyway. I have a school age child so germs are pretty much unavoidable in that situation. Whatever he brings home, we are all getting.

DS was on an airplane when he was around 3 weeks old. He did subsequently get sick and had a fever when we got back (we were house hunting here in NY from NC). He didn't need a spinal tap though.

I know that their immune systems aren't developed until about 2 months.

There are a few things I want to do with DH and may need to take the baby with us, specifically going to buy a glider. I am just wondering if it would be ok to take a 1 week old to BBB or a furniture store.

That's not why you don't take them out before 8 weeks. It's because should they catch a cold or get sick the protocol for a baby that young is an automatic visit to the hospital and a spinal tap. Not really pleasant. That's why they recommend you keep the baby at home for those first weeks.

That being said, I tried staying home most of the time and I would say for at least the first 5 weeks I didn't take DD anywhere except the ped. Then little by little we would take her out to Target or the grocery store but we kept her in her stroller and away from strangers. She never got sick. Chat Icon

Not taking them out in public DOES NOT mean not going out. We were STRONGLY advised not to take DS in public until he was 8 weeks. Some people do it before and will tell you nothing happened. As long as you understand that, yes, if the baby catches a fever of 100.4 the usual protocol is ER and spinal tap.

While I respected the "no public". I did got out after 2.5 weeks. I took stroller walks everyday. We went to a picnic with my work. It was all open space in a park. There is nothing wrong with that. When they mean public space, they mean stores, malls, etc...

There is no need to stay "at home". You can go out in your backyard, the park, etc...

I tried to stay in for 8wks but gave in at 6wks. I didn't let anyone touch her or really get near her. I walked around with sanitizer, just in case, you know there are still people who try to touch dc without asking. Plus I had dd in December didn't want to take the risk of her catching a cold or even worse the flu.

Oh totally agree, I should have been more clear. I went for walks in the neighborhood and we to Port Jefferson and walked around by the water but I limited indoor public places. So yes, I did get out of the house with her but tried to stay more outdoors. Chat Icon

Julia (my first) I waited 2 months.

Todd Jr I waited a month, but it was never to the mall or any big place like that.

6 weeks to a restaurant.

We went for walks all the time after he was about 2 weeks old. He was born in April and the weather was beautiful.

A walk will make you feel better...so you are not too cooped up!

I don't really rememberChat Icon I know I took her for professional pics at BRU around a week or so. I asked ped. first. Then I only took her outside for walks and stuff. No malls or anything for awhile.

Re: When did you first take your newborn out in public?

We had every other day appointments at the ped starting the day after coming home from the hospital, plus daily visits to the hospital for bloodwork to check her bilirubin levels. That went on for about a week. After that we took her out for a short trip to Target at 3 weeks, and took her out almost daily for short outings and even out to dinner a couple of times.
