When did you get rid of safety gates for stairs?

We just recently moved into our new house. We previously lived in an apt and had no stairs. DS is 28m old. He can climb up and down the stairs. I just don't want him to tumble down the stairs at night when we are sleeping.

Wondering when other moms got rid of safety gates for stairs.

i never had them. i have a 17 mos old.
she goes up and down them all day long...we just close door at night

I don't really use them anymore for my 2.5 year olds. They are still in the crib though so they can't get out of their room. I'll probably put a gate on the top of the stairs once they get into beds... and by that time the baby will probably be mobile, so we'll need them all over again!

My kids are 4 and we still have one at the top of the stairs. Too afraid of the one time they decide to get up in the middle of the night and head down the stairs.

i think i totally got rid of them at about 11 months old... that was when she was comfortable going up and down the stairs alone.... it might have been when she was a year, but it was around then.

we have 13 stairs (hardwood) that leads into the basement (ceramic)

i guess it depends on your comfort level...

also DD was out of the crib at 8 months old too... but it didnt bother me at night, because i am such a light sleeper... and she doesnt try to get out of bed

shes 25 months old now
