The day he turned 6 months I started CIO. I was at my wits end at that point - and couldn't rock him to sleep for another second.

The books suggest not doing CIO before 6 months - but I know a few moms had success with it earlier on!

It was right around the 6 month mark.

Noah slept perfectly till about 9-11 months old. Thats when we had issues. It took till like 13 months to solve them, now he sleeps great again.

My pediatrician recommends CIO at 7-8 months, although I was desperate for sleep and tried it at 5.5 months. I didnt stick to it though so it was a waste of time. Now that he is 8.5 months I usually rock him for a couple of minutes and then put him down whether or not he's asleep. I will still rock him to sleep for naps though.

I did not do CIO until she was over a year old and at that point, she knew how to self soothe....CIO is not for us Chat Icon

But, wasn't he sleeping in the swing at this point? The OP should probably know that since it's not really the norm KWIM?

both kids, 5 1/2 - 6 months. CIO worked great both times.

Re: When did you start getting tough with sleeping habits?

We just started at 13 months. DD was actually a very good sleeper until around the 11 month mark. Then we found ourselves getting into a habit of hanging out for an hour, rocking her to sleep. When she started waking in the middle of the night again, wanting to play for 2 hours, we decided we had to deal with it. It wasn't good for her or for us.

So, we did cry it out. The first time was a failure-I couldn't let her cry for more than 10 minutes. The next time, we got really tough. She cried for about 20 minutes and slept through the night. Now, we give her her last bottle, rock her for 5 minutes and put her in her crib. She cries, but usually only a few minutes and then she's out. When she wakes in the middle of the night we no longer run to her crib. I was surprised how easily she goes back to sleep most times. If we do go in, it's for a diaper change and then right back to bed.

NOW - when we actually do CIO - he's the wimp who wants to give in and get him!

My DH is the same way. He was ready at 6 weeks when witching hour was at it's peak!

I am reading The Baby Whisper (well actually skimming since it's hard to find time to read)! And she recommends that you start where you mean to go forward. Basically if you want to continue rocking your DC to sleep at 6-12 months when they are heavy, than start when they are infants. If you don't see that in your future, than start by putting them down drowsy. I am going back to work in 6 weeks and didn't want DD to get into any habits of sleeping in a swing, bouncer, etc. b/c I don't think the babysitter has all of these things, but she does have a pack-n-play. So I have been practicing getting DD to sleep in her crib. She goes down drowsy, mostly now that I have given her the paci (which the book says don't let them get used to a sleep prop) but it is not always easy to teach a 8 week old to self soothe and she loves the paci, so I gave in to that. But I am strict and OCD about the crib for naps when we are home.

When we are out she sleeps like a champ in the stroller.

I would recommend this book or another one like it. They recommend starting to sleep train at 6-8 weeks so bad habits don't form.

Don't get me wrong, I feel sad about not rocking my DD and having that special time together, but I feel that I am working towards a good goal for her so it won't be any more traumatic than it needs to when I go back to work.

Men-always want to rush things! In any case, I think you have to wait until at least 4 months. But even that seems early to me. Probably more like 6 months or so.
